April 2010
Wednesday, April 28, 2010Derby 144's theme was
"How do they work?". The idea here was to describe how something works with a diagram. Text was allowed to label your diagram. A fun theme -- I'm really sorry I didn't have the time to enter this time. Regardless, here's my favorites and yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Blue Canary In The Outlet By The Light Switch" Award
Newcomer Ncheremnykh's "Birdsong" is a beautiful crisp illustration. I love the contrast between the soft lines of the birds and the precise lines of the record players. The colors are refreshing and simple as well.

Monday, April 26, 2010I'm not going to have a chance to post tomorrow so I'm asking for the BLA nominations early. Also, please note there are a couple new rules for nominations now.
Here's your chance to have some influence on the Best Loser Awards. You can now post your image right here in the comment thread. Give me some reason why your favorite shirt is the greatest thing Woot will ever see and I'll include the best ones. Voting closes at midnight tomorrow!
A few rules:
- Please don't nominate yourself!
- No more than 2 nominations per person.
- Please use the 240x240 design detail image if possible.
- Please include your email address in the appropriate field below.
- Please describe the REASON you like the shirt -- I need more than "I like it".

Monday, April 26, 2010CapedCrusader514 has been participating for almost a year and he just got his first print. Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
102 (Pressure) / 20+ / 1. I've been lucky enough to get a splurge of HMs of late so the number of Woot shirts I own has sort of exploded, I'm holding onto just over 20 right now. I didn't actually think my shirt would print and then I ended up checking sunday morning at like 3:30(eastern) and was dumbfounded to see it actually did print -- excited is an understatement.

Monday, April 26, 2010Here's some shirts from the past that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Do-Over Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!
My "Curling Adventure" will be up for voting within the next week or so...

Sunday, April 25, 2010Eshto is almost brand new around here and already has his first print. Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
137 (Luck) / 2 / 1. For my first derby entry I made a Buddha wearing rabbit fur with rabbits' feet, for extra rubbing. I've bought two shirts so far, but hopefully I can afford more soon; just graduated and getting slammed by student loan payments.
What are your tools of choice?
I use a
Wacom tablet with
Photoshop, and
Illustrator for some things. I don't bother sketching on paper anymore, I just draw right into Photoshop. Occasionally I dabble in Maya (3D modeling) but I haven't needed to do it for Woot yet.

Friday, April 23, 2010Finally catching up here! Derby 142's theme was
"Classic Literature Mashup". The idea was to take two themes from classic literature (i.e., public domain texts) and combine them. Here's my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Man From Atlantis" Award
GeekFactor12's "Gulliver's Travels - Plato's Timaeus" combines Gulliver's Travels with the legend of Atlantis with beautiful results. The colors and style create a mood of wonder here that I just love.

Thursday, April 22, 2010Derby 143's theme was
"Earth Day". This derby was a little different in that it is actually done in cooperation with the Sierra Club. Winners will get some unspecified SC merchandise in addition to their usual take. Plus there is an off chance that SC could be interested in using the design for long-term use. Theme-wise it was a simple derby -- show your appreciation of the earth without text, video games, or bunnies. Here's our favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Love Bug" Award
ILoveDoodle's "EcoCar" is a whimsical idea with subtle colors, textures, and style.

Wednesday, April 21, 2010LittleClyde has only been here a short time and already has her first derby win after already being printed for a daily in the past. Here's more about her.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
131 (Palindromes) / ~5 / 2. I'm relatively new to Woot so it wasn't very long ago I entered the first time -- the Palindrome derby, I think. It's hard for me to start and finish a design in a day, so I don't enter that often unless I have an idea right away. I've only bought a handful of Woot shirts. My closet is already overflowing with t-shirts so I'm trying to cut back! I've already had one daily, "Big on the Inside", printed before my recent derby win, "Attack of Man".

Thursday, April 08, 2010BennyDougs has been participating in the derbies for almost a year and this is his first Derby win but his FOURTH print.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
103 (Outer Space) / 12 / 4. I think my first derby was the Space derby from last year. I got an honorable mention. I've bought maybe 12 or so. I just buy my own to keep or give as gifts. To be honest, I don't wear many graphic tees. Kind of ironic. I've had 4 shirts printed here: Night Owl, Zombie Vampire Robots, Pinball Wizard and Secret of the Sharpener.

Wednesday, April 07, 2010Derby 141's theme was
"Classic Comics Style". Woot was looking for Golden/Silver Age comic-book style drawings. A fun theme but one that would require a firm rejectionating hand -- which Woot didn't bother with. Many entries did not capture the correct era style. Here's a few that did capture the style correctly. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Martian Chronicles" Award
KaseyFleming did a wonderful job capturing a space-faring Golden Age comic style here. The orange background was a bold choice that gives it the appropriate alien planet tint.
