There is now only two weeks left to nominate designs for the 2012 BestLosers Calendar. I'm happy to pick them all myself if you really don't have any opinions. You can do that and read all the rules on the nomination page.
I'm going to be posting this reminder regularly and, each time I do, I'll be revealing one of my picks where I've already contacted the artist and got their blessing.
This first one is by GeekFactor12 and has a wonderful mood and color that I think will look fantastic on paper. Continue reading / Comment
Double-takes lose their excitement even earlier than a regular derby so here's your BLA(ish) post a day early.
Derby 214 was the Double-Take Derby #14 where all the shirts that Woot liked but didn't get printed get a second chance. Yesterday, I talked about the top 5 shirts they missed. Today, it will be the top 5 shirts (again in no particular order) that don't look likely to be printed but really should be. In addition, I have predictions for what shirts are likely to be printed next week when Woot picks their Editor's Choices. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot. Continue reading / Comment
This is Double-Take Derby #14 and since not every shirt can come back for another chance there are a few entries that are sorely missed. This is the top 5 shirts (in no particular order) that I'm sorry aren't here for a second chance -- the Shoulda Been Awards.
What are the shirts you miss since the last Double-Take? Add a comment below of another shirt that didn't make it this far.
Tomorrow, instead of the normal Best Loser Awards there will be another top 5 list -- the top 5 shirts from this Double Take that should have printed but were not. Continue reading / Comment
Here's a couple shirts selected from from the Derby 206 Loser Awards that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Do-Over Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!
As mentioned, BestLosers will be printing a calendar of some of the best unprinted Derby designs. Based on the polling results, here's the details of what we'll be doing:
This is 100% for charity and neither I nor the artists involved will get any payment. The Red Cross would be the beneficiary of all profits.
To encourage as many buyers as possible, I plan to offer these at 3 price points, depending on the amount you're willing to donate to charity: $15, $20, $25.
And now, the fun part. I'd like YOUR help nominating which designs from the Woot derby should be printed. I'm hoping we get a nice number of nominations here -- I'd really like to see multiple people clamoring for the same designs to know that I'm not just selecting one person's favorite. Derby 211's theme was "Dog Days". I didn't think I'd like as many of these shirts as I did. It would have been easy to get sidetracked by the large number of amateur entries this week and lose the wheat among the chaff but here's the ones I found. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Mango Lassie" Award
MichaelEvans mixes the right technique for the situation with incredible attention to detail. He uses halftones the way they SHOULD be used -- to achieve additional subtlety, not bang you over the head with some unnecessary glow. Great flow and bright colors on this very funny piece. Derby 212's theme was "Back to School". Not sure what it is about the theme this week but it felt like there were a million "almost" entries. I found myself confused on what was actually happening on many of these designs. There was a story being told but I had no idea what it was. Remember, you have a few seconds to communicate something with a t-shirt for the voters and even shorter for the people who pass you on the street. You have to be simple, direct, and clear about what you're trying to say. Here's a few shirts I understood. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Pencil Full Of Lead" Award
I like to see artists try to stretch themselves. BootsBoots could do her quirky humorous stuff and win a lot more but it's nice to see her try other techniques and styles. This is wonderfully crisp and simple with great colors. Continue reading / Comment

We've decided which way to go with this so there's no reason to vote anymore. I'd love to hear which designs you'd nominate for the calendar though.
There are too many excellent designs that pass through the Shirt.Woot derbies and never get printed -- at Woot or anywhere else. Many of these, for reasons of subject matter or level of detail, belong more on a print than a t-shirt. I'd like to select a dozen of those from the last few years and print them in calendar form to finally be able to enjoy them.
I'm not interested in getting into the commercial side of this so I'm thinking that my effort and the artists' designs would all be donated and all profits would go to charity.
I'll save further details on what all this would mean for a later post, but meanwhile I'd like to know how much you're really interested in this concept by having you respond to this poll.
Derby 211's theme was "Everyday 8-bit". I like pixel art. However, I didn't like many of these. If you're going to do pixel art, it's going to need a direct reference to some existing pixel art in a game or the subject matter needs a lot of right angles to make it attractive. Too many entries were treating this as an excuse for another slogan derby but with uglier art. Here's the few designs that did things right. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Hourglass Figure" Award
Only Walmazan could make so few pixels adorable and entertaining. Great idea, solid execution, and some subtle shading make it all work. Continue reading / Comment

Derby 210's theme was "Chemistry". I tend to like heavily nerdy themes like this but I didn't find that much original and exciting this time around. Add to that almost no limitations on text and growing abuse of animated thumbnails and you have a wince-inducing derby. Here's a few bright spots that you and I uncovered. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Dinosaur Diesel Train" Award
Lucky1988's "The Three Classical States of Matter" is a clever joke on one of those common knowledge things that you can't believe nobody has done before. As always, Lucky's characters are charming. Continue reading / Comment
