December 2010
Thursday, December 30, 2010Schrobblehead is an old-timer who has been here since Derby 22 and this is his first print -- another example of persistence paying off. Read on for more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
22 / 20-30 / 1. My first derby was #22 (Other Words of the Year) but please don't go find that entry, it's embarrassing. I've bought enough shirts that my wife has asked me to stop. I'd guess 20-30. I think most of my shirts in actual wearing rotation are from Shirt.Woot.

Wednesday, December 29, 2010Derby 179's theme was
"When Toys Attack". On first blush, it sounded like a fun theme. After seeing how the artists responded, it's clear that the theme was a bit too specific and didn't leave enough room for creativity to blossom. Due to that (and many artists being on vacation), I found much less to like this week. Here's the few great designs that I still loved. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Ultra-Long-Range Remote" Award
CmDixon2's "Phone Home" has a great story, wonderful use of negative space, and a fantastic flow on the shirt. Very wearable.

Monday, December 27, 2010Here's some shirts from the past that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Do-Over Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!

Tuesday, December 21, 2010Derby 178's theme was
"Mid-Century Modern Design". We had a recent technique derby but it's been a while since we've had a true style derby. There were lots of wonderful entries as you can see by my pre-emptive post earlier today. Here's your favorites and mine. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Spin Me Right Round" Award
Newcomer Expo01's "Time Traveler" is a wonderfully minimalistic design that effectively communicates a '60s movie poster vibe. Very wearable.

Tuesday, December 21, 2010On
rare occasions, a theme really hits a nerve with me and I like an unmanageable number of them. I want to mention these great wearable designs before the official BLAs tonight in hope that they'll get a few more votes. Go vote and give these artists some respectable numbers!
Since I have nothing else to give, these shirts will be getting BLAs just like tonight's shirts. Look for the badge in their Shirt.Woot entry comments.

Wednesday, December 15, 2010Derby 177's theme was
"I Love The Arctic". Woot works with the Sierra Club again -- this time to promote designating the Arctic Refuge as a National Monument. Any Artic-related (NOT Antarctic!) themes are fair game with no restrictions on text use. Very nice variety of entries this week -- heavy on the artistic versus the humorous which is a nice change. Also, way too many polar bears but that was expected and understandable. Here's your favorites and mine. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Who Needs A Parachute When I Have These Boards Strapped To My Feet" Award
SkiRochester's "Gunnbjorn Fjeld" has a wonderful thriftstore-find feel -- more than most anything else in the vintage derby a while back. Great composition and use of text. This is one I'd really like to wear.

Wednesday, December 08, 2010Derby 176's theme was
"Famous Movie Quotes Reinterpreted". The idea of this derby was to illustrate your favorite movie quote without specifically referencing the movie. There's really only two ways to successfully do this -- either illustrate your quote so obviously that people actually figure out the quote or use the quote as a jumping off point to create something interesting that stands on it's own, regardless of the quote. Unfortunately, many artists got caught up in a dangerous middle ground where knowledge of the title is required to really enjoy the shirt. Here's a few designs that managed to do it right. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Here's That Sick Squid I Owe You" Award
Kinzoku's "Well, Nobody's Perfect" is a unique and simple idea with pleasant colors. Very wearable.

Wednesday, December 08, 2010Travis Gentry ("TGentry"), besides being Shirt.Woot's most-printed artist, is now also their newest employee. Travis kindly agreed to an interview so we could get a few more details about his new job and how he got it. If you're curious about how Travis got his start, here's his
original artist interview from way back in Derby 25.
Tell me about your day job before you worked at Woot.
I was a Character Artist/3D Modeler for a game company in Bellevue, WA. I drew up characters and modeled and textured them for the animators to bring to life.

It'd be really nice to see either or both of these get an Editor's Choice print this week but since they're Halloween themed, it's probably not that likely.

Wednesday, December 01, 2010Derby 175 was the
Double-Take Derby #11 where all the shirts that Woot liked but didn't get printed get a second chance. Yesterday, I talked about the top 5 shirts they missed. Today, it will be the top 5 shirts (again in no particular order) that don't look likely to be printed but really should be. In addition, I have predictions for what shirts are likely to be printed next week when Woot picks their Editor's Choices. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
