Derby 42 Loser Awards
Derby 42's theme was
Join the Revolution. It sounded like a great theme idea but the lion's share of the entries were pretty similar. Is there something about revolution that requires a distressed technique? Here are some of the more interesting takes on the theme of revolution. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "You Say You Want a Revolution" Award
Riffmaster18, known mostly for a string of abstract designs that earned him several wins in the early derbies, is still plugging away. He's abandoned his easy wins for a continual experimentation with technique and style. This is one of his best with bold colors and a cartoony style that avoids looking silly. Look for his stuff every week -- not as recognizable as it used to be but better than ever.
The "Nature's Quiet Revolution" Award nominated by KLSwoot
Dekonstruct also switches up styles a bit this week. This is a nice design that screams peace in a soft way. I love how the tree is growing in a space that used to post a sign for war. The tree triumphs -- the wall crying "war" crumbles. The message and design are fantastic but voting may have been hurt by a difficult to see thumbnail.
The "Best of the Maunderings" Awards nominated by AttilaTheMom
AttillaTheMom has her own awards posted in the forums every week. Here's a couple she liked this week. Sundbe10's "Scientific Revolution" is for anyone who has ever wondered about the "why" of anything, and then tried to find out.
The voters are coming! The voters are coming! Errrr.. ok, maybe not, and maybe the orange is to blame, or maybe the other fogged entry is, but regardless, I think this is one of JamesCho84's best entries ever.
The "Way of the Dragon" Award nominated by eHalcyon
Toe2254 entered a number of impressive designs this week, not least of which is "Born Rebel". Such a large design means a lot of ink on the shirt, but that's a small price to pay when rebelling. The dragon has a great tattoo feel which tells the Man that you mean business.
Honorable Mentions
Thanks to all the contributors this week who pointed out shirts I might have missed. Every week there are dozens of great entries that get lost in the crowd but together we can call out a few and let the artists know their hard work and creativity is appreciated.
Everyone mentioned today will be getting one of these in their entry comments and (eventually) show up on their
ShirtDerbyStats's badge list as well.
If you'd like your favorite shirt to show up here next week, send in your nominations by mid-Tuesday. Give me some reasons why it is the greatest thing Woot will ever see and I'll include the best ones. Longer entries are more likely to make it outside the Honorable Mention section just for formatting reasons. Please include a link to the derby entry. And clever award titles can only help.
