Derby 45 Loser Awards
Derby 45's theme was
"ImagiNational" Symbols -- they were looking for crests, flags, seals, and such for a country you make up. Most everyone went with crests which got old after a while but there were also some truly interesting takes on the idea. Here's a list of the ones you and I liked. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Why I Wait Until Wednesday Afternoon To Post the BLAs" Award
Newcomer Xzanthis posted his shirt Wednesday morning. Even though he is currently top of the hotness, it is all but guaranteed his shirt will not get printed. However, it is never too late to get a BLA! This is a hilarious shirt that is well designed. It can stand on its own as a humorous shirt without the fine print but there is an extra reward for anyone willing to stand that close to you.
The "You Can't Handle The Tooth" Award nominated by Mjc613
First I must commend Edgar for submitting another delightful design evoking innocence and fun. This award goes to EdgarRMcHerly's "The nation in my head is inside my mouth". This could be a poster to help remind children to brush their teeth. I see Dental Hygienists wearing this to flossing conventions. Teeth -- where would we be without them?
The "Steam Powered" Awards
Sachmoe64's "Lightforge Nation" and TGentry's "Republique de Vapeurland" are two fascinating steampunk-themed shirts from two of the derby's most consistently talented artists. I'd love to see more on this theme from everyone and maybe even a steampunk derby.
The "Teacher's Pet" Award nominated by Mjc613
This award is for JadenKale's "Homonymia". Most teachers in elementary school concentrated on synonyms and antonyms, but every now and then, one would venture into the brave world of homonyms where two words are pronounced the same, but have different meanings, and sometimes are spelled differently as well, such as fare/fair and thyme/time, or on this shirt, kiwi and kiwi.
Honorable Mentions
Too many great ideas and art to mention. Look for the wonderful creative details in this selection: teddy bears, both whole and dissected; sea life, raw and official; aves, hatted and 'podded; non-Latin alphabets and nervous dodos. Wonderful work everyone!
Everyone mentioned today will be getting one of these in their entry comments and their
ShirtDerbyStats's badge list.
If you'd like your favorite shirt to show up here next week, send in your nominations by mid-Tuesday. Give me some reasons why it is the greatest thing Woot will ever see and I'll include the best ones. Longer entries are more likely to make it outside the Honorable Mention section just for formatting reasons. Please include a link to the derby entry.
