Derby 55b Loser Awards
Derby 55b's theme was
"Oxymoron". A standard theme with incidental text allowed. I was hoping that Woot would truly treat these three derbylympic events as challenges -- like working with only black and white in the last derby. Having the second event only a standard theme is disappointing as were many of the entries. I don't blame the artists -- this is a weak theme and it's hard to pull off something that is going to look good without explaining the shirt to someone. The "Teambuilding Event" Award nominated by eHalcyon
With creative and detailed designs, Xzanthis is undoubtedly one of the best unprinted designers on Woot. "Some Serious Fun" is a prime example. The subtle color scheme and clean linework is inspiring, and the joke can be understood outside the context of the derby. This may not be your week, Xzanthis, but if you keep submitting I'm sure you'll be printed soon enough! At least your day job seems seriously fun.
The "Spicy Food" Award nominated by eHalcyon
Mitohapa always comes up with something creative and well-drawn, and this week is no exception. Her entry, "Looks like we've got some fire-breathing whatsits", illustrates the classic oxymoron "freezer burn". Her flames convey a great sense of heat and the tentacles seem like they are really moving. My favorite part of this particular design, however, is the smiley on the fridge that is being attacked by a squid. Cephalapods are well represented here. Mitohapa, you consistently put out amazing designs, be they cartooned jokes or master works of art. However, I don't think I'll be coming over for dinner...
