February 2011
Monday, February 28, 2011Here's some shirts from the past that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Do-Over Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!

Wednesday, February 23, 2011Derby 187's theme was
"Retro Audio". Woot was looking for designs with vinyl records, cassette tapes, and other anachronistic media storage. Pop culture and text were disallowed this week. The pop culture rule was a welcome break but the text rule seemed excessive when at least incidental text could have been a nice addition for mix tapes and such. Frankly, I'm a sucker for vinyl and cassette type designs so it was tough for me to narrow these down. But, with your help, here's this week's best of the best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Nick and Nora" Award
Expo01 scores his 2nd featured BLA in a row. The combination of the space background, infinity symbol, and vinyl records works beautifully on this. The one thing that bothers me is that the needle arm position seems awkward -- it might work best to just leave it off. However, this is still one of the most wearable shirts I've seen in a while. I'd love to buy this one if I had a chance.

Friday, February 18, 2011FlyingMouse365 is an accomplished artist new to Woot. He just had his first Derby win but has had several dailies plus many prints at other sites.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
183 (Stars) / 12 / 4. I've had 3 dailies besides this derby win.
What are your tools of choice?
Wacom tablet: most of my work is done on the computer.

Wednesday, February 16, 2011Derby 186's theme was
"Oddball". Woot was looking for designs where there was an "odd man out" -- someone who wasn't fitting in with the rest. It felt like this derby got rolling later than usual -- as if the artists needed longer to really think about how this can be done. That's usually going to give us better results and this week proved that true. Here's a few of my favorites but mostly your excellent nominations. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "You Look Like A Very Happy Couple, Um, Are You? " Award
EdgarRMcHerly's style and subject matter are always unique and definitely oddball so it's natural that he would have something to say in this derby. For this design, he's communicated the classic inverse relationship between intelligence and happiness in a simple and fun way.

Wednesday, February 09, 2011Derby 185's theme was
"Things that Start with the Letter T". Wide open theme -- it doesn't take much to change your title and fit just about anything in this theme. For the most part, that meant a lot of fun off-the-wall entries -- and way too many turtles. Here's the almost turtle-free favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Face Only A Polygon Could Love" Award
Expo01 is consistently subbing interesting and crisp designs and this week is one of my favorites. "The Mystery of the Bermuda Shorts Triangle" is a fun idea with fantastic textures and colors.

Friday, February 04, 2011Here's the same post as the one I did for Woot but with nice big pictures. It was a pretty solid year when you look through the list of over 350 shirts that were printed this year. It was very difficult to narrow the best down to only 5 shirts so my picks leaned toward my "regret" shirts -- the ones I now realize I should have bought when I had the chance. As such, I don't own any of the great shirts below.

Wednesday, February 02, 2011Derby 184's theme was
"India". A good theme but we wouldn't have much here if they had a "no elephants" rule. Nothing wrong with having an elephant theme though. Here's your favorites and mine -- pachydermal and otherwise. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Fairground Attraction" Award
The recent slew of awards for the best shirts of 2010 reminded me that although CmDixon2 gets printed fairly frequently at Woot, it's not anywhere near as much as he should be. His work is always stunning in composition, conception, and detail. This week's "Break Free" is no exception. I love how he managed to make the horse look appropriately wooden and stiff yet at the same time you can look at it again and see action ready to burst forth.
