Interview with the 1st place winner of Derby 54
With only 6 other derbies under her belt, TheInfinityLoop scores a number one win in Derby 54. Here's a few more facts about her.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
Derby 47 (Home) / 3 / 1.
What are you tools of choice?
Photoshop and
Wacom Tablet (that my wonderful friends and husband gave me last year).
What is your typical process for going about a design?
I think about it for awhile and write a list of ideas that pop into my head. Then I pick around the top two and ask people what they think about them. Sometimes I become attached to an idea right away but sometimes others help me determine which would be best. Most of the time I sketch it roughly in Photoshop first, then build layers on top of it. I'm still learning Photoshop so I'm probably doing a lot of things the wrong way--ha ha. I've learned so much from the tutorials that helpful people like Jimiyo and eHalcyon have posted.
What design or art experience do you have outside the derby?
My dad is an artist, and I started painting watercolors with him when I was in elementary school. I took art classes all throughout school. Then I was briefly a graphic designer at a sign shop, so that got me some experience with commercial art. I took a break from art for awhile after that, but a couple years ago my husband and I started a little
web comic. That got me going again.
Which artists or designers inspire you?
I've always been inspired by cartoon artists and illustrators. When I was a kid I idolized Walt Disney and Don Bluth. Now, I thoroughly enjoy artists such as Rumiko Takahashi (writer and illustrator of the Inuyasha manga) and Akira Toriyama (artist for Dragonball Z and Dragon Quest).
Would you like to do art/design full-time? If so, what is your dream job?
I'd have to say no because I like doing art when I want to, not doing it when I have to.
Any plans to ever sell your designs using a print-to-order shop like SpreadShirt or CafePress?
I've thought about it. I'd like to look into it more when I have some time.
What advice do you have for new derby artists?
The most important thing is to not get discouraged. View everything as a learning experience, and use the advice that people give you. Try to find a balance between creating things that other people like and creating things that truly express yourself.
