Interview with the 3rd place winner of Derby 57
Hmmxkrazee is a derby old-timer who is getting his first print after many tries and after buying all of YOUR winning shirts. The least you could do is return the favor. It just goes to show you should never give up -- eventually everyone gets a turn (
If you keep trying. And you have talent. And are lucky. Some restrictions apply.). Here's a few more fascinating things about this guy.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
13 (Halloween) / 22! / 1.
What are you tools of choice?
Photoshop and
Wacom Graphire Tablet. In the process of learning
Illustrator.
What is your typical process for going about a design?
I'll usually think of what's popular with the Shirt.Woot crowd or something known by most people and come up with a design. Or I'll just think of something later on just randomly while going about my day. I'm not really an adventurous and respectable artist.
What design or art experience do you have outside the derby?
None really. I've always drawn and doodled but never really wanted to go the "art school" route. It's a hobby more than anything.
Which artists or designers inspire you?
Jim Lee, NC Soft artists (Guild Wars art direction is amazing), some other people that I can't think of...
Would you like to do art/design full-time? If so, what is your dream job?
I wouldn't mind it if it was the right job. I'm into videogames so maybe being a concept artist or art director for a game company would be nice. I was actually thinking of trying to intern at Blizzard but I was too nervous since I don't have a portfolio or anything professional like that. Just doodles. And a
Starcraft webcomic. It's pretty nerdy.
Any plans to ever sell your designs using a print-to-order shop like SpreadShirt or CafePress?
I might but I've been kind of lazy. I have ALOT of past derby designs so it might be worth it. Although I don't know how many people would be interested.
What advice do you have for new derby artists?
Play the field for a bit. Try different styles. It gets really discouraging when you have some designs you think will be popular and they get like 10 votes. I actually didn't think "Yay My Favorite" would be so popular. I thought maybe another design I had entered for that derby would do better but it got like 5 votes so yeah, it's pretty unpredictable -- yet predictable sometimes. It drives me crazy. I mean krazee.
