"Fairy Tales". This is one of those derbies where the theme really inspired some beautiful art. Way more than I can practically talk about unfortunately. I've narrowed it down as far as I can. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Killing Tree" Award
Very cool to see such a beautiful illustration for a fairy tail I'm completely unfamiliar with. I have a weak spot for tree shirts and this one is fantastic -- just the right mix of light and dark, optimistic and foreboding. Wonderful work, LittleClyde!

Tuesday, July 26, 2011Occassionally, a theme really hits a nerve with me and I like an unmanageable number of them. I want to mention these great wearable designs before the official BLAs on Wednesday in hope that they'll get a few more votes. Go vote and give these artists some respectable numbers! Also, there are NO nominations so far and I really can't believe you don't like something in this derby. Nominate before midnight tonight!

"The Number 4". Coming right after the Letter O derby this feels pretty tired. But the artists were a lot more creative with this and Woot seems to treat the number derbies with unusual laxness. You can pretty much draw four of anything and it's on topic -- no logic required for why there are four. Luckily the artists were able to use that freedom well. There were a lot of great shirts this week and here's the best of the best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Wail To The Chief" Award
Pharmacide says "Radscoolian outdid himself with this one. There is some clever storytelling going on here and that awesome background adds the finishing touch!"

"The Letter O". Way too many Octupi. Open up a dictionary, people! I wasn't so thrilled with the results of this derby so I'll let you guys pick most of them. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Zooropa" Award
Lovely linework and textures on Mattcom's "Orchid Onryo". Nice to see it on a white shirt too. One quibble is that it doesn't "feel" very Japanese but the skill shown makes that forgivable.

The "Zooropa" Award
JLefkowitz hasn't participated much in the last few years and that is a real shame. "Urban Safari" has a fantastic mid-century feel with cool colors and loose lines. I'd definitely like to wear this one.
