Sokowa has been around for a long time and has had several shirts printed before this one. Here's a bit more about her.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
21 (Winter) / 11 / 4. Including all the shirts I purchased using my free-shirt coupons, I've bought 23 shirts. This is my 4th printing (I came in 3rd in the Dream derby, 2nd in Lyrics Illustrated and 3rd in Motion).
What are you tools of choice?
Paper/pencil, then scan into
Photoshop and clean up using a
Wacom Tablet. I've been learning
Illustrator as well.

Monday, June 30, 2008In response to Woot's Honorable Mentions, here's a few that I think they missed. Since these shirts will almost certainly NOT be in the "Best Of" derby, they are excellent candidates to be sold and printed by the artists themselves using
SpreadShirt or other such direct-to-garment shops. I'm just back from vacation and still haven't done the Derby 48 Loser Awards so consider this a preview.

TheDansterWasHere has been around for the last dozen derbies. His first Derby was #35 where his "Pockets of Spring" came in 3rd as well as getting a
Best Loser Award here. This time he comes in 2nd. Here's a few more facts about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
#35 (Spring) / 4 / 2. I've bought 4 shirts but including some multiples and the complimentary shirts, the total is about 14. I've had 2 shirts printed.

Derby 47's theme was
"Home". A nice, open theme with no text allowed. Here's a list of the ones you and I liked. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Constellation Flexible Suit Contract" Award nominated by Mjc613
Zenne's "Home is where you make it" is a nice creative take on the home theme. This suit is much better than the suits built for previous space programs because the gloves are flexible enough to allow knitting, and you don’t have to worry about the points damaging the fabric.

Sunday, June 15, 2008In response to Woot's Honorable Mentions, here's a few that I think they missed. Since these shirts will almost certainly NOT be in the "Best Of" derby, they are excellent candidates to be sold and printed by the artists themselves using
SpreadShirt or other such direct-to-garment shops. Since Woot tended toward the humorous picks, here are a couple of the more artistic ones they missed.

Derby 46's theme was
"Green" -- they were looking for something that fit the theme of green as well as requiring green ink or a green shirt. That sounds like the makings of a great derby -- an open enough theme with a nice amount of restrictions to keep it creative. Unfortunately, the submissions felt a bit forced and not necessarily designs people want to wear. That said, here's a list of the ones you and I were able to pick out anyway. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "They Don't Take Kindly to Vegetarians" Award
Dekonstruct's "Rampage Salad" is a bright silly shirt with a little subtle homage to the classic 80s video game. Surprisingly few votes for a mainstream entertaining shirt.

Briannyc128 is derby old-timer come back to show us how it's done. This is his 2nd shirt print and first derby win. I remember Brian as being the creator of one of my favorite never-printed shirts -- "
Powered by cheese".
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
5 (Light) / 4 / 2.
What are you tools of choice?
I work primarily in
Illustrator CS3 on a Mac Pro, but usually begin in a small sketchbook. I have a
Wacom tablet that I use from time to time, on the more illustrative entries.

Even though Rglee129 is one of my favorite artists at Woot, I managed to miss the fact that not only has he been around since Derby 32, but Springatron was his design. It's getting so busy around here it's getting hard to keep up. Starting this week I'm expanding my interview pool to include all 3 printed artists in order to get more new artists since
certain people seem to get the #1 win so often. So, depending on how the votes fall, you might see as many as 3 interviews in one week! Hopefully, you enjoy them as much as I do.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
#32 (Line Art) / 10 / 3. My first derby was #32. I ended up with maybe 30 votes or something? I've bought 10 shirts, starting with "Killer Bees" -- still one of my faves, but my all time fave is "Delicious". I've had 2 derbies and 1 daily printed.

Derby 45's theme was
"ImagiNational" Symbols -- they were looking for crests, flags, seals, and such for a country you make up. Most everyone went with crests which got old after a while but there were also some truly interesting takes on the idea. Here's a list of the ones you and I liked. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Why I Wait Until Wednesday Afternoon To Post the BLAs" Award
Newcomer Xzanthis posted his shirt Wednesday morning. Even though he is currently top of the hotness, it is all but guaranteed his shirt will not get printed. However, it is never too late to get a BLA! This is a hilarious shirt that is well designed. It can stand on its own as a humorous shirt without the fine print but there is an extra reward for anyone willing to stand that close to you.

Tuesday, June 03, 2008The shirts in the gallery that are now available for sale are really drying up. I think many artists are waiting to see what happens with Woot's eminent "Best Of". Why sell your shirt yourself when you still might get $1000 for it?
So I'm going to skip the weekly announcements for a time. Meanwhile, I'm happy to do a special post just for you when you open a new shop. Just
contact me and I'll post something here.
