June 2009
Monday, June 29, 2009Cmdixon2's "Circle of Sea" returns as "SeaLife" and as a side print at
DesignByHumans. Check it out and vote it up.
Wednesday, June 24, 2009Derby 100's theme was
"Mystery". For the most part, this theme was treated as "murder mystery or mythical creature" -- Woot was pretty firm about things being on topic and there aren't too many ways to interpret "mystery" that can be easily defended. In addition to the theme, Woot tried hiding artist names for fun and experimentation. It didn't work since their solution was very incomplete -- there were several ways to find out the artist if you really wanted to know. However, the casual voter probably didn't bother checking for names and there was no indication that not knowing the artist name really affected voting patterns. There was some pleasantly unusual entries this week -- here's my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Awkward Silence" Award
"Mystery Date" is a great idea very well executed. I love the desaturated colors and the rich textures. Very pro.

Wednesday, June 17, 2009Derby 99's theme was
"the Sun". A very general theme and one that naturally lent itself to plenty of artistic and abstract designs. As you saw by
yesterday's post, I liked a good number of the designs this week. Here's my favorites as well as yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Reading Rainbow" Award
Radscoolian's "Retro system" is a cool abstract solar system design with a variety of textures and subtle colors. Very wearable.

Tuesday, June 16, 2009This week's derby entries really struck a nerve with me and I have way too many for a manageable Best Loser Awards tomorrow. So, I'm just going to mention these great shirts that have amazingly few votes. Go vote and give these artists some respectable numbers!
Since I have nothing else to give, these shirts will be getting BLAs just like tomorrow's shirts. Look for the badge in their Shirt.Woot entry comments and their
ShirtDerbyStats' badge list.

Friday, June 12, 2009CrescentDebris has been around Woot for more than six months and has two prints under his belt. Here's some more you didn't know about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
61 (Movie Titles Re-Interpreted) / 4 / 2. My first entry was "Inspired by Death Wish" from Derby 61. My first print was
"Unprepared" from the Dinosaur derby.
What are your tools of choice?
I use GIMP and a 6x8 Genius tablet. A combined expense of like $50 -- but at least it's honest. No bootleg copies of
Photoshop here. If I win another derby perhaps I'll go ahead and get PS like everyone else. You know, be cool and use actual Pantone colors.

Friday, June 12, 2009JewelWing is a frequent contributor in the Woot Derbies and has had many popular designs that did not print. Now she's started
her own MySoti shop to sell a few of those. You can also check out her
recent print at GoodJoe, available right now.
If your former Woot shirt is up for vote or for sale somewhere else, please let me know and I'll blog about it.
Wednesday, June 10, 2009Derby 98's theme was
"Famous Quotations Illustrated". These title/quote themes have been successful in both generating interesting designs and selling a lot of Woot shirts (although for not necessarily the same shirts). There were some really cool shirts this week. It was hard to limit the number of BLAs to a manageable number but here's what I settled on. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Reading Rainbow" Award
I love this design -- a colorful and textured book with all the reading excitement exploding off the pages. It looks like the artist ConcreteRocket has been here for some time but I've never noticed any earlier work so this may be a debut. In either case, I'd love to see more like this!

Friday, June 05, 2009LexingtonDK's former BLA-awarded shirt, "Relax" is available for sale in his CafePress shop. Take a look.
If your former Woot shirt is up for vote or for sale somewhere else, please let me know and I'll blog about it.
Wednesday, June 03, 2009Derby 97's theme was
"BBQ". Not a theme I care much for but the artists did a great job with a variety of different takes on the theme. Here's my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Does A Bear Cook In The Woods" Award
Cmdixon2's "BearBQ" is a beautifully illustrated scene of a nighttime bear cookout under a sky full of fireworks. Fantastic work with composition, halftones, and color mixing. Very professional.

Monday, June 01, 2009Enedlhach has been lurking around Woot for a while submitting here and there and has already gotten a print with a collaboration with fellow newcomer ThreeMpress.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
? / 9 / 1. I've thrown some random stuff in there once or twice but nothing that had success. This was ThreeMpress's first derby though he didn't really know anything about Woot until I told him and showed him the ropes of the derby. I have bought 8 or 9 shirts, and TMP has bought one other then Salsa.

Monday, June 01, 2009Wmorrill has been participating in the Derbies for the last 6 months or so and has his first print. Here's a few brief facts about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
67 (Video Games Through Art History) / 6 / 1.
What are your tools of choice?
My tool of choice is pencil and ink. I like to do all the linework in pencil and ink then scan it onto the computer and use
Photoshop for the coloring. Generally I go through the coloring process and then spend a large amount of time deciding which colors I actually want to use. This was a particularly difficult method in the pointillism derby, but usually its easier for me.
