May 2011
Tuesday, May 31, 2011This is
Double-Take Derby #13 and since not every shirt can come back for another chance there are a few entries that are sorely missed. This is the top 5 shirts (in no particular order) that I'm sorry aren't here for a second chance -- the Shoulda Been Awards.
What are the shirts you miss since the last Double-Take? Add a comment below of another shirt that didn't make it this far.
On Wednesday, instead of the normal Best Loser Awards there will be another top 5 list -- the top 5 shirts from this Double Take that should have printed but were not.

Tuesday, May 31, 2011Here's some shirts from the past that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Do-Over Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!

Wednesday, May 25, 2011Derby 200's theme was
"Silver Screen". Along with the classic movie theme came two new gray shirt colors which everyone wanted to try out. That led to an unusually high number of monochromatic entries. Besides hoping for a bit more color variation, I was thrilled with the theme and the entries this week. Here's my favorites and yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Unsmudgeables" Award
Newcomer DroopBomb entered a fantastically detailed charcoal drawing of a 1920s-style gangster film. Beautiful shading and great composition. I'd love to see more from DroopBomb. GeekFactor12 adds "I love the moody, charcoal look of the design -- so perfect for the theme!"

Wednesday, May 18, 2011Derby 199's theme was
"Cyberpunk". I was quite disappointed that such a cool topic could produce such a mediocre crop of designs. Similar to the Steampunk Derby, it feels like most artists had a limited exposure to the genre and did their best just relying on Woot's half-hearted description. Combine that with seemingly random choices of what gets rejected and you have yourself a pretty lousy derby. Of course there are always exceptions. Here's the few bright spots. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Eye In The Sky" Award
This feels less like a cyberpunk shirt and more like another great Robbie Lee shirt (nothing wrong with that). Robbie justified his design well so I'm comfortable it fits within the theme. Great colors and composition on this. I'd love to wear this one.

Monday, May 16, 2011The interview with the second of our first-time printed artists this weekend: MidgeRock.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
162 (Cryptozoology Redux) / 6 / 1. One and only one.
What are your tools of choice?
Pencil and paper and Gimp.
What is your typical process for going about a design?
Well to get ready I put on "It's Raining Men" by the Weather Girls and then put on a huge dance number with lights and fog machine and... sorry that's my process for going out on Friday night. Um... sorry. If I'm designing for the Woot Derby I usually look at the theme and then kick around ideas until one hits me and then I start sketching out ideas. Once I'm settled, I scan and start working in Gimp: usually getting my line work refined; then move on to colors. Recently I've been playing more with textures and shading using varied brushes going back and forth between erasing and coloring with varied opacity then halftoning the final layers.

Wednesday, May 11, 2011Derby 198's theme was
"Shirt Titles Reinterpreted". I'm not sure if artists were incredibly inspired by riffing on other artists' names or they were able to use the huge number of possibilities to assign a name to just about anything they had already made. Either way, the results were very creative and varied. It was difficult narrowing down this list to a manageable number so here's the best of the best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Silver Apple Tree" Award
BassAnimation's "King of the Beasts" has some lovely linework and subtle colors. The gnarled limbs are fantastic. Great work!

Wednesday, May 11, 2011I'm having some technical and scheduling difficulties over here so this week's Best Loser Awards will be later than usual -- most likely some time tonight. Thanks to all of those who nominated shirts to help me along!

Monday, May 09, 2011On increasingly
less rare occasions, a theme really hits a nerve with me and I like an unmanageable number of them. I want to mention these great wearable designs before the official BLAs on Wednesday in hope that they'll get a few more votes. Go vote and give these artists some respectable numbers! I have to at least insist you click on our lead shirt today to see the full composition -- you won't be disappointed.
Since I have nothing else to give, these shirts will be getting BLAs just like tomorrow's shirts. Look for the badge in their Shirt.Woot entry comments.

Wednesday, May 04, 2011Derby 197's theme was
"Royalty". Woot was extra strict with pop culture this week and the vote totals show it -- obviously people want something they've already seen before. I think it's nice to take a break from the pop culture but this theme was a little weak to carry such a strict derby. Despite that, there were some very nice entries. Here's your favorites and mine. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Order Of The Slippery Lion" Award
WinterArtwork's "Fallen Royalty" is a really great idea nicely implemented. I'm a little concerned about the placement -- it looks a little too high -- but I'm sure that's something Woot can tweak before the print. I'd love to be wearing this one next week so vote it up!
