November 2010
Tuesday, November 30, 2010We're in the middle of
Double-Take Derby #11 and since not every shirt can come back for a another chance there are a few entries that are sorely missed. This is the top 5 shirts (in no particular order) that I'm sorry aren't here for a second chance -- the Shoulda Been Awards.
What are the shirts you miss since the last Double-Take? Add a comment below of another shirt that didn't make it this far.
On Wednesday, instead of the normal Best Loser Awards there will be another top 5 list -- the top 5 shirts that should have printed but were not.

Monday, November 29, 2010Kinzoku's been here for over 2 years. This is the first chance I've had to interview her but she has been printed before. Read on for more.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
68 (Exercise) / 20 / 3. My first entry was also my first time experimenting with new art software, so it's one of my least favorite personal entries. But I got the hang of it soon after. I've bought twelve shirts, plus eight randoms. My first and favorite is "PB and Jellyfish". I've had two derbies and one daily printed. Those would be "You're not one of us anymore, Pluto.", "Ill-gotten Trinkets", and "Survival of the Funnest".

Monday, November 29, 2010Here's some shirts from the past that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Do-Over Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!

Wednesday, November 24, 2010Derby 174's theme was
"Crosshatch". It's been a long time since we've had a technique derby and it's a very welcome break. The artists have gone all out and drawn some beautifully detailed pieces this week. I like way more shirts than usual so the BLAs are long; I still left out shirts that would have been easily included on other weeks. Here's the shortest list I could come up with! As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Daisy Jones' Locker" Award
There are many stunning illustrations this week. Very few are great illustrations and at the same time wonderful t-shirt designs that take into account the strengths and weaknesses of the wearable cotton canvas. Kinzoku's "Ill-Gotten Trinkets" hits both marks square on. There are tons of fantastic details done with a classic illustration feel. The picture is appropriately portrait-oriented without being overly rectangular. Kinzoku is careful to not let the details and the ink overwhelm the eye since a t-shirt is often seen from a distance. And the colors are high contrast while still being unique and pleasing. Very professional. If this doesn't print, it's a crime.

Wednesday, November 17, 2010Derby 173's theme was
"Build Your Own Robot". It felt like this theme was very popular with the artists and not-so-much with the voters as there were many under-appreciated entries. Here's the best of the best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Amazing Stories" Award
KaseyFleming shows off his strengths and influences with the stunning "Robot Tales". Really shocked to see this not stay in the fog the whole week. GeekFactor12 adds "Simply the best of the week -- a gorgeously shaded retro masterpiece".

Wednesday, November 10, 2010Derby 172's theme was
"Home for the Holidays". This theme was pretty wide open -- anything from travel to Thanksgiving to Christmas to Winter designs. It's nice to have a Christmasy derby this early to have plenty of time to slow ship some shirts in time for gifting. Lots of strong designs this week -- here's my favorites and yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "gChristmas" Award
ParrotWorks' "Results for Home for the Holidays" is a perfect double-image. From a distance, a stylized Christmas tree -- up close a detailed Google map to find your way home. Nice work with the fading road lines -- almost looks like text and then disappears to nothing. Very pro.

Wednesday, November 03, 2010Derby 171's theme was
"Meat". Text was allowed as long as there was some artistic element as well. Overall this made for an entertaining derby -- with a rule combination like this, the entries were unusually joke-heavy. Maybe I'm always attracted to what is scarce in the derby so my picks this week shied away from a lot of the jokes and text-heavy shirts. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Last Of Their Kind" Award
Kevlar51's "The Catch" is an intense illustration of man's lust for murder and/or meat. Disturbing and sad in an otherwise overwhelmingly silly derby. The simple monochrome palette was an excellent choice.

I had the unusual pleasure to take my pick out of the BLAs for this week. Strange to have so little overlap between the BLAs and HMs for this round.
