November 2011
Wednesday, November 30, 2011Derby 227's theme was
"Sci-Fi Kawaii". Woot brazenly asks for the designs that are all-but-guaranteed to make the extra bucks by having a cute/sci-fi derby mashup along with wide-open rules. With all those freedoms there were still many rejections mostly due to... NOT ENOUGH CUTENESS. Hard to believe. Despite all the pandering, there were still some charming shirts in the mix. I kept things mostly pop-culture free for my picks. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Great Escape" Award
Patrickspens keeps it classy with his painterly "Escape". I love the mix of cartoony angles, visible brush strokes, and dystopian feel.

Thursday, November 24, 2011Some of you might be wondering why I chose such a generic and large charity to donate our
Calendar profits to. I'm a long-time supporter of many charities and have worked as a volunteer and employee for non-profits in the past. I used to avoid giving to large agencies thinking that my money wouldn't matter or that they'd have a larger overhead that would eat up all the money. It actually tends to work in the opposite way: the larger charities, like large businesses, have economies of scale and can pass on MORE of each dollar directly to helping people. Also, because they are large and well-known, they have to be more transparent with how they spend your money and how much their directors are paid.
If you've never taken a look before, check out
Charity Navigator to see how some of your favorite charities measure up. You'll notice that the
Red Cross has excellent ratings.

Wednesday, November 23, 2011Derby 226's theme was
"Math in Nature". Although there were few restrictions, the theme itself was difficult enough to keep out a lot of pop culture dreck. There were plenty of rejections but there should have been more -- few shirts seemed to really capture both sides of the theme. Here's a few of my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "G Force" Award
SpiritGreen captured the theme wonderfully with his "flying" squirrel shirt. Great character, great joke, and great fall colors.

Friday, November 18, 2011For those of you who aren't aware of it yet, Wooter and occassional Derbyist Uniique has started his own t-shirt contest site named appropriately,
TshirtContest.com .
It works a bit like Woot does with a weekly themed contest but is more relaxed about giving rights back to the artist quickly. I haven't participated yet but intend to soon!

Friday, November 18, 2011Thanks to all of you for filling out the survey. It's clear that price is the main factor affecting sales. I'll put the calendar on sale CHEAP for 12 hours from midnight Thursday to noon Friday for Black Friday and then look into setting a new permanent lower price that can still leave something for charity after the sale.
I'll hopefully see you Friday!

Wednesday, November 16, 2011Derby 225's theme was
"Australia". Nice and simple and pop-culture free after last week's pig out. Lots of stuff to like here mostly in the area of great animal shirts. Here's my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Now In A Convenient Bulk Pack" Award
Kevlar51 and BootsBoots collaborated on this fun piece. Fantastic use of the shirt color with little splashes of brightness make this work. I really like the placement as well.

Or go ahead and check out more details about the calendar

Wednesday, November 09, 2011Derby 224's theme was
"In the Kitchen". Another twist on the frequent derby theme of food. The kitchen/foodie focus gave it a nice turn -- a bit less anthropomorphized food which was refreshing. But the lax rules on pop-culture and text led to a bizarre wave of way too many Link/Zelda shirts. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Now Who Knows If You've Been Bad or Good?" Award
PixelPants' "Seasons Eatings" is a fun joke, solid colors, and lots of great little details. I guess the fridge is there to keep the food a little warmer?

The BestLosers calendar is finally
up for sale at Lulu.com. I was hoping Lulu would allow you to create one calendar and offer it for sale for multiple price points. Unfortunately, that isn't possible so I picked the midpoint price of $20.
For those who would like to save a bit off of that, there is a Lulu coupon available for a short time that can save you 15%:
NINECAL. Either way, this is for charity -- 100% of profits will be sent to the Red Cross.
There is a preview flipbook of all the pages available on the
Lulu page or by continuing reading on this post.

Here's the cover for the BestLosers Calendar (click to see a larger version). I am really excited to put this up for sale and order my own! I'm thrilled with the the final roster of artists -- there's a nice mix of regulars vs. occasional participants, old-timers vs. new kids, and detailed artistry vs. stylish designs. I'm also excited that many artists put in more than a trivial amount of work to change their artwork for the new medium, orientation, and capabilities of paper printing.
Thanks again to the hard-working artists! Be patient, it'll be for sale very soon!

Wednesday, November 02, 2011Derby 223's theme was
"Awkward Moments". Definitely a tough derby -- it was easy to get sidetracked into slightly off-topic designs which added up to a lot of rejections. Here's a few that stayed right on topic and looked great doing it. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "But Not A Real Green Dress, That's Cruel" Award
ChumpMagic's "Fur Kills" has wonderful expressions, composition, and colors. Excellent use of the white background and the two shades of purple-gray for the trees is lovely.

Tuesday, November 01, 2011The first date to talk about is the date the calendar will be for sale. I have all the artwork now and am setting up the calendar layout. I will have it done and for sale no later than November 6th.
The other dates I'd like to talk about are YOUR favorite dates. I'd love to hear your favorite dates and anniversaries that you'd like to see in this calendar. I don't want to hear about your personal birthdays and anniversaries (no offense) but dates that many people would find useful and entertaining: Woot-related dates, pop culture dates, art dates, geek dates, etc.
I have a lot of them already: Pi day, Woot's birthdays, Draw-a-dinosaur day... What else would you like to see?
