October 2008
Wednesday, October 29, 2008Derby 66's theme was
"Versus". Woot was looking for any classic battle of X versus Y. They pretty much accepted everything that was even described that way so the theme was really wide open. No text again this week. Here's the ones I liked best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Dewey Decimal" Award
EdgarRMcHerly's "Fiction vs. Non-fiction" shows Edgar's incredible growth as an artist as well as an example of one of his much more accessible works. Classic Edgar sketchy style on the drawing plus more crispness and color than he usually has. One of his best.

Wednesday, October 22, 2008Now this is what Shirt.Woot
should look like. Long-time Wooter Bluchez has outdid himself with a better interface to Shirt.Woot named appropriately
ShirtWhat. It has clear instructions, links, and compiled history for everything you'd want to know about buying from and participating on shirt.woot.
Wednesday, October 22, 2008Derby 65's theme was
"Shirt as a Costume". The theme was not really my cup of tea but the artists ran with it and had a surprising number and surprising quality of entries. Here's the ones
I liked best (isn't it interesting that every time there is a Woot-off I get zero nominations?). As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Who Can It Be Now?" Award
DeJourney's "I need some fresh air" does a wonderful job of meeting the requirements of the derby but at the same time creating something artistic, unique, and something you can wear more than once a year.

Tuesday, October 21, 2008BadTChap has been around for a few months and this is her first print. Here's more about her.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
46 (Green) / 5 / 1. In the Green derby I did a graphic of fish swimming in toxic sludge and submitted it really late. Can't remember how many votes I got, but it wasn't very impressive!
What are you tools of choice?
I wish a
tablet was, but I don't have the cash for that. I'd say pen and pencil plus
Illustrator. Illustrator makes more sense to me than
Photoshop. My brain gets it. When I try and do something in Photoshop I get frustrated and think about how I could get it done in a second in Illustrator. But I'm trying to change that to take my design up a notch. It's coming along slowly.

Monday, October 20, 2008In response to Woot's Honorable Mentions, here's a few that I think they missed. Since these shirts will almost certainly NOT be in the "Best Of" derby, they are excellent candidates to be sold and printed by the artists themselves using
SpreadShirt or other such direct-to-garment shops. Here's a couple of funny shirts that might do well sold on their own.
Wednesday, October 15, 2008Derby 64's theme was
"Pets". Great theme -- simple enough to give the artists some freedom and specific enough (not just "animals" say) that you can inspire them. No text this week. Many fantastic entries -- it was tough to narrow it down but here's the entries you and I liked best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Too Much Time On My Hands" Award
Sundbe10's "Walking the watchdog" is a creative take on the derby with a cheery look despite the dark shirt and crisp lines. Great highlights and reflections.

Sunday, October 12, 2008GrandpaStu is pretty close to brand new since he's only been around for the last few derbies. He already gets his first print -- and a sellout -- with his entry, "Soundwaves". Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
61 (Movie Titles Re-Interpreted) / 5 / 1. The very first contest I entered was derby 61. I had a rather uninspired Rainbow Brite submission; really I was just figuring out the whole woot derby process so I wasn't exactly trying to hard. I've bought 5 shirts: "Stop Motion", "Madness of Miss Stereo", "Moloko Plus", "The Choice Was Not Hard" and one of the random shirt blowouts Woot has every now and then (I didn't really like it so I have no idea what it's called).

Friday, October 10, 2008I was completely unaware how long Radiomode has been around the Shirt.Woot derbies -- he started way back in derby #6. He just had his first print with Woot a few months ago but has been printed at many other shirt sites including Threadless. Here's a few brief facts about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
6 (Night) / ? / 3. I believe my first derby entry was the "night" derby -- it was long time ago. You can guess from my Woot profile how many shirts I've bought! I've had three shirts printed so far; two on derbies, and one on daily.

Wednesday, October 08, 2008Derby 63's theme was
"Art as Text". I usually like text-themed derbies but this one didn't intrigue me so much. The problem for most of Woot's text derbies is that the rules are so specific -- in this case, that the text must be made of artistic elements -- that the artists get caught up in meeting the requirements and forget to make something we'd like to wear. There were way too many shirts that were just a word drawn across the chest with nothing additional to make intriguing. You and I were still able to find a few that moved past that. Here's the entries you and I liked best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Honestly Chillin'" Award
LexingtonDK's "Relax" isn't so easy to read but the image of casual Lincoln is fun enough that it doesn't matter so much. Nice calming blues and subdued reds complete the picture.

Monday, October 06, 2008Capttylor34 has been here for a few months but kept a pretty low profile until hitting one out of the park last week (with a little help from DSladek). Here's a bit more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
43 (Slogans) / 1 / 1. My first derby was the slogan derby, I submitted one on ninjas... on like Tuesday...it didn't do well. So it does't count. My first REAL illustrated entry was for the "Summer" Derby.
What are you tools of choice?
I am really enjoying working in Flash right now, though I have used
Photoshop in past entries. I also work on a
Intuos 3 tablet.

Wednesday, October 01, 2008Derby 62's theme was
"Panic". I wasn't expecting much from this derby especially it is so similar to the recent "Emergency" derby. But there was some very funny and even some truly scary shirts this week. Here's the entries you and I liked best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Solving Global Warming One Punch At A Time" Award
Even though it is a bit too similar to his other punching shirt, "Tin: Old Skool", I couldn't resist RGlee129's "Panic at the Pole". Great colors to get your winter wardrobe going. I think RGlee129 might need some anger management classes though.
