September 2009
Wednesday, September 30, 2009Derby 114's theme was
"Cooking". A fun simple theme. As common lately, the additional rules of no text and no video game references applied (which was enforced very strangely this time). I wish they wouldn't be so explicit about the no video game rule -- the first week they drop that rule, everybody is going to feel the need to enter a video game shirt! Anyway, here's my favorites for this derby. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Samantha Tries Something New" Award
I love the retro look on newcomer BassAnimation's "Monsterpot". Great characters and subtle colors. It could maybe be a bit bigger so everyone can enjoy the details as much as the wearer.

Wednesday, September 23, 2009Derby 113's theme was
"Harvest". A good theme, appropriate for the season. A few too many death themed entries but there were some very interesting takes on the idea as well. Here's my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "That's Mr. Head To You" Award
I try to avoid giving the same artist the top spot in the BLAs in back-to-back weeks but I really enjoy Walmazan's "Botany 101" more than most. Yes, it's another pop culture reference but at least not one beaten to death. Crisp and flowing lines and stylized shapes make for a bold design. The subdued colors would look great on brown.

Wednesday, September 16, 2009Derby 112's theme was
"Japan". Text, if present, was required to be in Japanese. A wonderful theme with many creative entries. Here's my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Fly Fishing" Award
Walmazan's "Big Bite" is a crisp illustration that sits back and calmly lets you figure out what you're seeing. Cool colors and bonus points for a classy shirt comp. Either Walmazan is another long-time lurker suddenly entering designs or I've missed his or her earlier work. Either way, I look forward to seeing more.

Thursday, September 10, 2009LKackman has been around Woot for more than a year and this is his first print. Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
65 (Shirt as Costume) / 17 / 1. I believe I entered the shirt costume derby first. It was a horrible entry which eventually was rejected for incidental text -- or at least they didn't think it was incidental. I designed it in like ten minutes just so I could see how the whole entry process worked. I wish I would have planned for it better, I really think I could have came up with a better idea. To date I own 17 woot shirts, and my girlfriend has bought 7. I have only had one printed design -- sad day. I do however, have two I'm working on for daily shirts.

Thursday, September 10, 2009FiveDoorSvt has only been participating in the derbies a short time but already has a print. Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
104 (Tattoo) / 2 / 1. I've been watching derbies for a while now and finally decided to enter a few weeks ago.
I've bought just two -- the "Your Mom" shirt from last week and my own.
What are your tools of choice?
I usually do sketches with pen and paper, scan in the artwork and then vectorize it in
Adobe Illustrator. I really like the clean lines of vector graphics, but despite it's name Illustrator isn't really built for "illustrating" in the hand-drawn sense. So having a hand drawn picture to use as a guide is much more efficient than trying to draw in the program.

Wednesday, September 09, 2009Derby 111's theme was
"Blue". A nice combination of color restrictions (only blue shirts) and a wide open topic -- anything that can be related to the color blue. Lot's of artistic and unusual entries this time -- I liked quite a few of them. Here's my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Neptune Is The Sea" Award
MarzipanApple's "Blue Green" is a beautiful design with great colors and textures. I love the color on the eyes and lips.

Tuesday, September 08, 2009I apologize for the extremely late BLAs for derby 110 -- derby 111 will be on time tomorrow! Derby 110's theme was
"Flora". A straightforward theme with no text allowed. I liked a lot of the entries but didn't fall in love with many of them. Here's a few you and I did love. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Grand Poobah" Award
Fun character, crisp style, and subdued colors which still pop on the shirt. Awesome. Hopefully this HMs so people can reconsider their choice. I can't help thinking the number of votes was hurt by making "Mr. Fez" mysterious until you click for the full comp. I suspect many people still vote on thumbnails only.

Wednesday, September 02, 2009I'm on vacation and want to do justice to the Best Loser Awards instead of rushing through them. So they'll be late -- maybe as late as next Tuesday. Hopefully somebody will still care by then! Thanks for the all the nominations you've already sent. Since there is extra time, feel free to send more if you like.
