September 2010
Wednesday, September 29, 2010Derby 166's theme was
"The Letter C". A great theme -- specific enough to get people's creative juices flowing but broad enough that the crazy ideas that people come up with can fit. Here's my favorites and yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Do You Meow Out In Your Sleep" Award
A hearty welcome back to Dekonstruct! This is why he is missed -- there really aren't enough people even aware of Joy Division for this to have a chance at getting enough votes to print BUT he did it anyway and it's fantastic. Hilarious and perfectly executed.

Monday, September 27, 2010Here's some shirts from the past that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Do-Over Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!

Thursday, September 23, 2010I just picked up the awesome "C-H-I-C-A-G-O" shirt from Design By Humans. You might remember this design from the Architecture derby last year. I was a big fan then and I'm thrilled to have bought it now. DBH has all shirts for $12 now and since I went first, you get my 10% discount: ATCSFP.

Wednesday, September 22, 2010Derby 165's theme was
"Scientific Method". As a few people mentioned, this theme was not really demonstrated by most entries. I think Woot set themselves up by inviting people to "just cram a beaker onto a cute fuzzy animal design". I'm not going to try to limit my BLAs to only what is truly on topic but include everything since that really seemed to be Woot's intention. Here's my favorites and yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Galapagos" Award
"Darwin's Data" by Josephus is a wonderful sketch and humorous take on the theme. Great work!

I wish I had a typical process. Sometimes I sketch out an idea on paper, sometimes I sketch it out in Photoshop, and refine it from there.

Wednesday, September 15, 2010Derby 164's theme was
"Prehistoric Art". I had fun participating in this derby but I can't say this theme generated many shirts I loved. Here's a handful of exceptions. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Goddess On The Mountaintop" Award
Amarillo mixes two Venuses (Venusi?) in "The Birth of Venus of Willendorf". Amazing that he made this beautiful and interesting using very difficult source material yet making it totally recognizable. I love the knit accessories!

Wednesday, September 08, 2010Derby 163's theme was
"Rain". This was a great theme -- broad enough to get a lot of variety but on a subject that can give a lot of visual inspiration. I had trouble narrowing down all the great designs to a reasonable number but here's my favorites and yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Wallpaper Sticks To The Wall" Award
CmDixon2 always does a fantastic job of mixing the stylized and the realistic. "Rain, Rain, Go Away" is a wonderful example. I love the side placement, falling paper, and almost-invisible grid lines.

Wednesday, September 01, 2010Derby 162's theme was
"Cryptozoology". This is a repeat theme and one that I was happy to see again but I thought I'd like more shirts than I did. I think I'm still suffering from a Double Take hangover and I'm not ready to move on -- I'm going to definitely need another week of ECs! There were still some great shirts here that I couldn't resist. Here's your favorites and mine. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Water For Elephants" Award
Sogj's "Elephus Nessius Pransterus" is a great visual pun with crisp colors. Keep up the great work Sogj!
