Derby 40's theme was
Mom. I was a bit worried with this theme that people would get stuck in a rut and we'd have just a few entries and limited creativity but I was pleasantly surprised with the quantity and quality. Here are a few of
our favorites -- yes that's right, since I'm accepting nominations from you, these are the ones we noticed together. Sorry for the length of this post -- between the ones I loved and the excellent write-ups from you, there is a lot to go through this week. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Yes, I Do Requests" Award nominated by Mjc613 and KlsWoot
Newcomer DSladek actually draws AtillaTheMom's request for someone to illustrate her ID and does a wonderful job with it. This mom puts up with no nonsense, and personifies the statement "I brought you into the world, I can take you OUT!" The line work and the subtle coloring in this entry are just top notch. DSladek will soon be getting his own following on Woot.

SpreadShirt has switched from iron-on to direct-to-garment printing so I ordered some shirts to check out the quality. Here's some details about what has changed:
- For those of you who are store owners, any prints you had that were not designed for plot-printing have now been automatically switched to use direct-to-garment.
- Direct-to-garment has a higher DPI (200 vs. 120) than iron-on so you need to check your shirts to see if the image has shrunk.
- The price has gone down $1.50 for dark shirts (yay!) and went up $1.50 for light shirts (no big deal).
So here's the new printer stats for SpreadShirt. Compare this to the original stats I published in the
SpreadShirt Printerview some months ago.

Monday, April 28, 2008A few things to tell you about:
- The badge contest deadline is by the end of the day on Wednesday. Thanks to all those who have sent me an entry. There is still time to enter if you haven't already! The winner will be announced Thursday.
- Please send me your recommendations for this week's Best Loser awards. I'd like to hear what some of the rest of you like this week. There's a few more details on what I'm looking for at the end of last week's Loser Awards.
- The gallery image problem has now been FIXED.

In response to Woot's new weekly Honorable Mention feature I wanted to feature a couple shirts that they overlooked. Since these shirts will almost certainly NOT be in the "Best Of" derby, they are excellent candidates to be sold and printed by the artists themselves using SpreadShirt or other such direct-to-garment shops. I especially wanted to feature these two particular shirts this week since both of the entrants were brand-new to Woot and I wanted to encourage them to keep participating.

It's been 60 days since the Water derby so there is a new batch of shirts that are available to sell now. I have posted pictures of a couple designs that will soon be available for sale. Click the picture to visit the artist's gallery. If you have shirts that you'd like to sell from Derby 31, please upload them and work with me to setup your artist gallery page.

JamesCho84 gets yet another #1 win with his "Treacherous Waters" shirt. I last interviewed him for his derby 21 win. Here's an update on his very impressive stats.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
#1 (One) / 20 / 16. Sometimes, I order the 3 complimentary shirts so I have about 10 orders of those, but the other 10 have been ones that struck my eye (all dailies).
I've had 14 Derby prints and 2 Dailies.
Anything else you'd like to tell the world?
I'm starting up a design blog and tutorial site, which I hope materializes into a store, seeing that I have some people interested. Other than that, thanks Robert and your bestlosers site, and I hope to bring everyone some nice designs to come.

Derby 39's theme was the Motion. Another wide-open theme this week with a lot less interest for me compared to last week. I was able to pick a few I liked though. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Couldn't they have chiseled me a softer chair?" Award
TGentry's clever and attractive "The Occasional Stretch" has a great use of colors to simulate the look of marble. Also check out TGentry's hilarious "The Fastest Animals on Earth" below in the Honorable Mentions.

FableFire gets another #1 win with her "1986: The Legend Was Born" shirt. She made a big splash back in derby 14 when she was brand-new to Woot. Since it's been so long since I interviewed her, here's an update on her stats.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
#11 (Cryptozoology) / 11 / 4. I've bought 7 designs other than my own: Avocado Man, Wave Function, Angry Day, Skullflower, Animal Hat, and two random shirts (Chicago Skyline and Dissipate -- which turned out awesome by the way). I've had 4 shirts printed by woot. Each was a derby winner (Scurvy, TCTP, Plan B, and now 1986).
Anything else you'd like to tell the world?
Boosh!

Derby 38's theme was the Year You Were Born. A wide-open theme which usually leads to lots of "junk entries" but people were pretty restrained. There were a lot of theme duplicates but there were also some very creative entries. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Watch out for the Decepti-Green-Machine" Award
Zenne and JamesCho84 team up for this Transformer-inspired shirt. Great humor in selecting a very innocuous robot choice. Unexpectedly pleasant and mellow color choices for a robot shirt.

Some of you may be familiar with Bountee -- they're a boutique version of SpreadShirt and CafePress with a more streamlined store setup process and (so I've heard) higher quality Direct-To-Garment printing. Well, here's a chance for all of us to find out how good they are. Shirts are 50% off for the next 50 hours from the time of this post. That brings them down to Woot-friendly prices. Not sure when on Thursday that was actually posted and it might actually be in England since I believe their HQ is there. So you really want to hurry for this one. I bought DerekFilley's "Calvinball". Use coupon code BOUN733 to get your 50% off.

Derby 37's theme was Greed. A pretty weak theme but Woot chose it for a very good reason and the derbyists made the best of it. Starting today, large blog posts like this one will be split to get the home page to load faster. So make sure to click "continue reading" below to see the whole list of the ones I liked this week. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "But would it still taste like chicken" Award
ShellyBFly's "So hungry/greedy he could eat a horse" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue but it's a great idea with subtle x-ray coloring. Shelly looks like a promising newcomer!

This is a follow-up interview with ShigWarm. He was the #1 derby winner way back in derby 13. We'll just be updating his stats today.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
#2 (Heat) / 7 / 2. I've bought seven so far. With my favorite being "Control Yourself" designed by Sam Brown. I'm a huge fan of his designs on his website ExplodingDog, so when I saw his daily I had to buy it. Both of my prints were derby entries. "Pumpkin and Ghost" for the Halloween themed derby, and "Gettysburg Address" in the Text themed derby. Both took first place.
I'm really glad Woot upped the prize winnings right before my design won this last derby! $1,000! That translates into 3,000 tacos on Del Taco Tuesdays. How lucky am I? However, now that their initial-day-printing capabilities have increased, I wonder who is really getting the deal. The artist or Woot? Does the artist miss out on 2nd-day sales they would have otherwise received with fewer initial prints? I guess we'll see.

Thanks to everyone for all the t-shirt uploads. Last week we hit 100 uploads and one week later we're already over 140! New artists this week are GutSmasher77 and RiffMaster18. GutSmasher77's shirt is for sale immediately and RiffMaster18's will be available next week. They are going with a new t-shirt company called Pooby5. Pooby5 prints the shirts that didn't get chosen at Woot and Threadless. They are looking for new artists to work with so if you'd like to make money on your designs without bothering with a print-to-order store, read up and contact Pooby5.

Derby 36's theme was Text as Art. I guess I'm in the minority in that I like text shirts -- not just some slogan shirt with nothing else to it, but beautiful typography and script. I was thrilled with this derby idea and a good number of the entries. Here's my favorites. Click on the entry to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Handout" Award
TheDansterWasHere gets another Loser Award. Last week his Loser Award shirt actually ended up getting printed. Unfortunately, that doesn't look very likely this week. I love the sinewy look of the arm on "Them's Fighting Words". The color in the resub is a big improvement and gives it some depth.

Since I write about the shirts in the same contest I enter, you'll never see me promote my weekly derby entry here. However, since I don't write about the shirts at Design by Humans, I have no problem promoting my entry over there! This is my last-minute entry for the special Temposhark band t-shirt contest. If you like it, please click on it and vote. Thanks!
