April 2009
Wednesday, April 29, 2009Derby 92's theme was
"Steampunk". I was really excited by this theme but a bit underwhelmed by the designs. I suspect steampunk is obscure enough that it was a brand-new concept to most of the artists so they just added some rivets and some smoke to a design they might have entered any other week. Of course I was able to find a few gems anyway. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Who You Callin' Caboose?" Award
I always love Rglee129's robot designs and this one is unusually great. Great details and a cool massive feel to it. Bonus points for the tiny John Henry in the foreground.

Wednesday, April 22, 2009SkiRochester has been working hard entering derbies for over 6 months and now has his first print. Persistence pays off! Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
58 (Work) / 2 / 1. My first entry was for derby #58 (Work). I had just discovered the site and did a pretty quick design just to figure it all out. I was hooked immediately though, and have entered every derby since except one. I've only bought two so far. There were a lot of designs I wanted to buy that didn't get enough votes to print.

Wednesday, April 22, 2009Derby 91's theme was
"Trees". I make no secret that I have a weakness for tree designs. So naturally I was pleased when they picked this theme and I liked many of the designs this week. Here's the favorite ones I picked out with a little help from you. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Splintered Medusa" Award
It's nice to see Tolagunestro on Woot. Hopefully the low number of votes won't discourage him from trying again. I'm sure this would have received more votes if the whole design was shown in the thumbnail version. I love the textured swirls and subtle colors on this. I want more!

Wednesday, April 15, 2009Derby 90's theme was
"Almost". It wasn't obvious from the theme whether this idea would inspire great designs or mediocre. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the latter. I'm a bit surprised since with something this vague you could really swing any design and make it "almost" with the right title. Oh well. Here's a few good ones I picked out anyway. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Mom, He's Looking At Me" Award
TGentry's "We're Almost There" does a great job capturing the endlessness of long trips in the car when you were a kid. The 60's style fits well and shows TGentry's flexibility. Good stuff.

Wednesday, April 08, 2009Derby 89's theme was
"Dinosaurs". It sounded like it would be a pretty boring and repetitious but the entries were amazingly creative and interesting. I guess people have a lot to share about dinosaurs! Here's my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Armageddon" Award
Dekonstruct's Brontosnorus Saves the World" is the best of the many truly hilarious and unique shirts this week. I love the simple black and white and crisp lines.

Wednesday, April 01, 2009Kdubbs29 has been around for a few months and this is his very first print. Here's some more facts and stats on him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
73 (Optimism) / 2 / 1. I bought my first shirt so that I could start voting for my own shirts, and the other when my shirt recently won.
What are your tools of choice?
Adobe Illustrator for all my illustrations. And then
Photoshop for preparing the thumbnail and comp.

Wednesday, April 01, 2009Derby 88's theme was
"Music". Pretty much a rehash of
Derby 7 (Sound) but it's been a long time and Music is a nice general and popular theme. Lot's of great solid shirts this week but no stunners. Here's the ones you and I liked best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Wyld Stallyns" Award
KrisRobinson's "Garage Band" has tons of personality and great little details -- a really fun shirt. I also like the creative use of color and the way it fits into the shirt. Excellent work!
