August 2008
Sunday, August 31, 2008This is my 4th entry at
Design by Humans. It's inspired by 6-winged angels called Seraphim. This is my entry for the $10,000 contest DBH has running right now. This is a combination of hand-drawn, fractals, and lots of
Illustrator manipulation. I was trying to capture hints of bird wings, butterfly wings, nebulas, and tie-dye. Please
vote and comment. Thanks.
Thursday, August 28, 2008This is my 3rd entry at
Design by Humans. It's taken from an old Joy Division song that isn't ever far from my thoughts. DBH has a $10,000 contest that ends tomorrow but this isn't intended for that. I do plan to enter that one as well though. I've been working on a much more complex design for that and I'll see if I can finish that instead of a Woot entry tonight. Anyway, please
vote and comment on this one if you can. Thanks.
Wednesday, August 27, 2008Derby 57's theme was
"Dessert" -- a straightforward theme derby with no text allowed. Unlike
last week, my favorites weren't at the top of the voting list -- things are back to normal! Still plenty of great shirts to choose from this week -- here are the ones you and I liked best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "If There's One Thing I Can't Stand It's People Groveling" Award
Xzanthis continues to put out some great artistic shirts week after week. "Tasty Grail" is no exception. Great details and intriguing color choices.

Monday, August 25, 2008In response to Woot's Honorable Mentions, here's a few that I think they missed. Since these shirts will almost certainly NOT be in the "Best Of" derby, they are excellent candidates to be sold and printed by the artists themselves using
SpreadShirt or other such direct-to-garment shops. Here's a couple of cool shirts that could do well sold on their own.
Friday, August 22, 2008Here's a catchup interview with BeefCoat who was printed last in derby 47. Here's a few facts about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
27 (Dreams) / 7 / 4. After watching a couple of weeks I finally submitted my first design in the "dreams" derby. I submitted on Tuesday which I quickly found out was too late to hope to win anything.
What are you tools of choice?
I started in
Photoshop but now I use a combo of both Photoshop and
Illustrator. Plus I just recently got myself a
Wacom Cintiq tablet with the winnings from the "Greed" derby.

Wednesday, August 20, 2008Derby 56's theme was
"Elements". Woot was looking for each shirt to be about one and only one element from the table of the elements. Easier than it sounds since even a pun on the elements name was considered valid. A pleasant surprise this week was seeing many of the ones I liked best doing very well with the votes. If that wasn't so rare, I could hang up my hat and quit blogging! Many great shirts to choose from this week -- here are the ones you and I liked best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Untame Lion" Award
I know it was not Mitohapa's intention to draw a Narniesque Aslan and Prince Caspian (or King Peter) but that's the first thing I thought of and "Gold: From Lead To..." fits very nicely for that as well as the intended golden references. Great details and color choices.

Tuesday, August 19, 2008This is the 3rd in a series of "printerviews" where I interview someone to find out how they get their shirts printed. The last one was with
SoothedByRainfall. Another fellow derbyist that goes by Skaght on Woot runs
PsychoReindeer.com where he screenprints his derby losers as well as other unique designs. Here's more about him, his shop, and screenprinting.

Monday, August 18, 2008eHalcyon has been an enthusiastic derby entrant and poster since joining a few months ago. Finally, he gets a shirt printed after many popular entries that didn't quite make it.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
Derby 36 (Text as Art) / 10 / 1.
What are your tools of choice?
Photoshop CS3, a
tablet (Wacom Graphire 4) and - most importantly - the Undo function. I also plan to learn how to use
Illustrator at some point.

Thursday, August 14, 2008Derby 55c's theme was
"Freestyle". Part three of the derbylympics was the first "anything goes" derby we've ever had. Strangely enough, there was not a million slogan entries -- Woot has us so trained to avoid text, we don't include it unless they specifically say we can. I liked the variety of styles and ideas this week but many of the shirts felt rushed or were obvious late entries or reworks from earlier this week. Still plenty of good stuff to pick through -- here's a few you and I liked. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Shake It Like A Polaroid Picture" Award
LunchBoxBrain's
Threadless resub, "Take a picture" makes a few new fans here at Woot. Love the colors on this!

Here's a shirt I had at DBH a long time ago which I am resubmitting at Threadless. I went with a slightly different placement at Threadless but this is the old image I had available. Click on it to take a look and please vote and comment! Thanks!
Tuesday, August 12, 2008Derby 55b's theme was
"Oxymoron". A standard theme with incidental text allowed. I was hoping that Woot would truly treat these three derbylympic events as challenges -- like working with only black and white in the last derby. Having the second event only a standard theme is disappointing as were many of the entries. I don't blame the artists -- this is a weak theme and it's hard to pull off something that is going to look good without explaining the shirt to someone. There was still a few bright lights in all this gloom -- here's a few you and I liked. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Teambuilding Event" Award nominated by eHalcyon
With creative and detailed designs, Xzanthis is undoubtedly one of the best unprinted designers on Woot. "Some Serious Fun" is a prime example. The subtle color scheme and clean linework is inspiring, and the joke can be understood outside the context of the derby. This may not be your week, Xzanthis, but if you keep submitting I'm sure you'll be printed soon enough! At least your day job seems seriously fun.

Monday, August 11, 2008Derby 55a's theme was
"Black and White". Only white ink on a black shirt or black ink on a white shirt is allowed. Beyond that, there is only a "no text" rule and otherwise anything goes. This is part 1 of 3 derbies this week which will mean 3 Best Loser Awards over the next few days. Since I'll be doing so many, I'm trying to limit the number of shirts I choose. That's difficult with this first round since I found so many beautiful shirts. Here's the ones I liked. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Serpent And The Woman" Award
TGentry is always one of my favorites but he has really outdone himself with the art and detail on this shirt. In both subject matter and style he has done something new for him and different than anything else in this derby. I look forward to seeing this again at DBH or wherever it ends up.

Saturday, August 09, 2008With only 6 other derbies under her belt, TheInfinityLoop scores a number one win in Derby 54. Here's a few more facts about her.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
Derby 47 (Home) / 3 / 1.
What are you tools of choice?
Photoshop and
Wacom Tablet (that my wonderful friends and husband gave me last year).

Wednesday, August 06, 2008Derby 54's theme was
"The Old West" and the incidental text rule is in effect. Maybe I just don't like the western theme that much but it felt like most entries were a little on the half-baked side -- unusual since the theme was announced early and there was a full extra week to work on these. That said, there was still plenty of shirts you and I liked. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Ghost Riders" Award
Mitohapa's "Ghost Town Cactus Trio" has a wonderful spectral otherworldly feel to it with unusual colors and distinct linework. The side placement is a nice addition.

Monday, August 04, 2008DSladek has been a favorite of mine since he joined Woot a few months ago. Now he has finally had not one but two shirts printed -- and in the Double-Take Derby no less! Here's a few more facts about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
37 (greed) / 0 / 2. My first woot derby was the "greed" derby for which I made "Ooo Shiney." I have BOUGHT zero shirts thus far, but I have gotten five for free. three of my Energy Harvester, Three of Ooo Shiney and one The Madness of Miss Stereo. I have two more free coupons that I am waiting to use. I know, I'm cheap. but I'm in college -- give me a break!
