August 2009
Wednesday, August 26, 2009Best Loser Award winner "Hugs" by Omnitarian has been picked up by daily site,
RiptApparel. It will be available for 24 hours starting tonight at midnight CST -- same time as Woot. If you click on the thumbnail before then you can also take a look at fellow-derbyist Drakxxx's shirt currently for sale.
UPDATE: Unforunately, Ript messed something up and Omnitarian's shirt is not available yet. I'll repost when he has a new publish date.
Wednesday, August 26, 2009Derby 109's theme was
"School". Simple theme. Nice to see incidental text allowed. I saw a lot of interesting ideas but few where the good ideas were matched with good execution. Here's a few exceptions. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Pythagorhino" Award
BootsBoots always has wonderful characters on her shirts. I really like the dumbfounded rhinos on this one. Great use of texture to enrich the colors.

Wednesday, August 19, 2009Derby 108's theme was
"Architecture". I was really excited about the theme -- I was thinking lots of right angles and crisp designs. Not too many shirts really came anywhere near that although I did find a few I liked anyway. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Shirt Of Broad Shoulders" Award
Newcomer ExclusiveApe really hit the nail on the head for what I was looking for in a theme like this. Simple and bold lines and interesting colors with a bit of a '60s vibe. I really like it despite the fact that I've never even visited Chicago. I think the artist was hurt by his detail image which isn't even square -- I had to download and chop this thumbnail myself.

Monday, August 17, 2009Woot has started reprinting classic shirts now for the handsome sum of $20 each. It's a lot of money but most people are eager to pay to get some of those shirts that you couldn't quite decide on, didn't quite have the money for, or have already ruined with barbecue sauce stains.
When printing classics you have to start with the very first one and that is of course,
Sore Thumbs. BestLosers hasn't been around quite since that first day but it was still early enough for me to get an interview with Geekfactor12/MJ where we go through how "Sore Thumbs" came about. Read
all about it, read more about the
classics or check out
"Sore Thumbs" for sale right now.
Wednesday, August 12, 2009Derby 107's theme was
"Bags". Bags wasn't really the theme though -- it was the canvas. Woot is asking the derbyists to design their new shirt bag. First-day cash awards are standard ($1000) but there will, of course, be no royalties. The big mystery is what they will do at the end of the derby come Thursday. Since it's just a bag, they will not be offering it for sale. I'm guessing they'll continue their Editor's Choice picks from last week's Do-over derby.
The bag designs are limited to black, blue, and yellow on white. Besides having the Woot logo and no text, the subject matter of the design was wide open. The best entries made Woot their theme and used the limited palette in creative ways. Here's my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Adventures Of The Woot Justice League" Award
DevDave's "Little Woot Story" makes great use of the rectangular space on the bag to illustrate a comic-book style story of how Woot is able to afford sending out AA shirts for $10. Lot's of fun. I'd love to get this in the mail.

Wednesday, August 05, 2009Derby 106 was the
Double-Take Derby #6 where all the shirts that Woot liked but didn't get printed get a second chance. A couple days ago, I talked about the top 5 shirts they missed. Today, it will be the top 5 shirts (again in no particular order) that don't look likely to be printed but really should be. In addition, I have predictions for what shirts are likely to be printed next week when Woot picks their Editor's Choices. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.

Tuesday, August 04, 2009Yodal is pretty new around here. She was introduced to the derbies by her brother Kris Robinson who was recently interviewed
here. Here's more about Yodal.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
95 (Pointillism) / 13 / 1. The Pointillism derby was so hard! I can’t look at dots the same way again! I think my entry failed miserably and got something like 50 votes. But it got me hooked and I’ve been entering ever since. I have 13 shirts, my fave is "Stay Sharp" because the people I live with can’t stand it which makes me love it all the more. But I did just receive "Evil-O-Meter" and "Xenoproboscized" so "Stay Sharp" might be in danger of losing favorite shirt status. I only have one shirt printed so far -- my Early Bird shirt -- but I have submitted some dailies so here's to hopin'.

Monday, August 03, 2009Not only does KidGrenouille have the unusual honor of being one of the only Derby "Chomps" (as opposed to Champ, Chimp, or Chump for the 1st 3 prints), but he has also been plugging away at this since almost the beginning! He's definitely a patient man and I'm glad that he is -- he has great comic-book style linework with an eye for simplicity and boldness -- one of my favorite Woot artists. Here's a few more facts about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
6 (Fake me out to the ball game) / 2 / 1. I'm an old-timer! I first entered way back in Derby #6, "Fake Me Out To The Ballgame: Imaginary Sports Logos." I must be a glutton for punishment. I've bought two Woot shirts: STAY SHARP! and CROWS. Looking back at their stats now, neither one of them was very popular with the wider Shirt.Woot audience. STAY SHARP! was reckoned in its first week, and CROWS only sold 571! This suggests I am badly out of step with Wooters' tastes, which would explain the low vote tallies I usually get in the Derby.

Monday, August 03, 2009We're in the middle of
Double-Take Derby #6 and since not every shirt can come back for a another chance there are a few entries that are sorely missed. This is the top 5 shirts (in no particular order) that I'm sorry aren't here for a second chance -- the Shoulda Been Awards.
Wednesday instead of the normal Best Loser Awards there will be another top 5 list -- the top 5 shirts that should have printed but were not. You're welcome to try to sway me with your nominations but there will be no award names or write-ups so don't bother sending those.
