December 2008
Wednesday, December 31, 2008Derby 75's theme was
"Cabin Fever". The theme was somewhat vague -- pretty much anything to do with cabin fever or claustrophobia was accepted. No text as usual. A weak theme combined with fewer participants due to the holidays made for limited entries and limited votes. Maybe due to the limited votes, a couple of the shirts in the fog are unusually artistic. Besides those, here's some other great shirts I picked out. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "King Of All Wild Things" Award
DeadFrog's "Natural Habitat" is an interesting play on the monsters-under-the-bed idea with a "Where the Wild Things Are" flavor to it. Great style, shape, and placement.

Monday, December 29, 2008I was a bit reluctant to do this list since this blog really focuses on the shirts that Woot didn't print. But I decided to write it in order to show that cool shirts
do get printed at Woot.
The interesting thing about this list (besides the fact that I own most of them) is that there is only a single shirt that actually won a derby on this list yet two other shirts that were later editor's picks. That shows you the whole reason this blog exists -- I regularly see shirts I love in the derbies but they are rarely printed.
Keep reading to see my other four favorites of 2008. Clicking the shirts will open the (now sold out) sale page.

Sunday, December 28, 2008Yesterday was the Top 5 shirts that did not get printed by Woot but are still available somewhere else. Today's list isn't so positive -- it's the Top 5 great derby shirts of 2008 that unfortunately can't be bought anywhere.
Hopefully, this list will inspire the artists to consider putting their shirt up for sale or re-entering them in an alternate contest. Also, if I missed something and one or more of these shirts actually IS available somewhere, please let me know.
Keep reading to see the remaining four forgotten shirts of 2008. Clicking the shirts will open the original derby comments for that shirt. Add your comment or, even better, PM the artist to encourage them to give their shirt a try somewhere else.

Saturday, December 27, 2008This is the first of several end-of-the-year Top 5 lists I'll be doing. This list is the five great shirts that did not get printed by Woot but thankfully are now available somewhere else. There is a bit of a caveat for this first shirt here though -- it is available at
Cameesa to be supported -- essentially a "pre-buy" that will be available as soon as a total of 25 people have bought in (read "
Trying Out Cameesa" for more about how Cameesa works).

Wednesday, December 24, 2008Edgar R. McHerly is a popular artist who has been participating on Woot for a long time. Instead of the interview I requested, Edgar opted to tell us all a story. Click on the images to see the print-ready formatted image that Edgar prepared.
Hello everyone.
Mr. That Robert wrote to me the other day asking for an interview, but because I am rather shy and interviews make me uncomfortable and all that, I asked him if it would be okay for me to send in something else instead.
So I figured I'd tell you a story I read somewhere, probably a long time ago. It begins in a field where peach trees grow. In the field, there stands one peach tree in particular atop a very small hill. On a warm summer evening, if you were to stand at just the right angle and watch as the sun fades behind the horizon in the background, and if you had the mind to say so, you might say the tree's silhouette looked something like a heart. I've drawn a picture here to give you an idea of where you ought to stand, should you happen into the field some summer at sunset.

Wednesday, December 24, 2008Derby 74's theme was
"One Continuous Line". Woot was looking for a design where you could see the beginning and end of one continuous line. I love when Woot does design challenges like this instead of just a theme. That said, I was a bit disappointed that nobody experimented much with line width. Woot gave no indication it had to be a THIN line. That made many of the designs a bit too subtle on the shirt. Here's a few that made up for that in other ways. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Mutiny Heron The Eerie" Award
Mitohapa specializes in flowing line-centric designs like this one. "Heron Rising" is a great stylized piece where the heron blends in with the water. One of the few designs this time where the line width varies and also one of the few that doesn't appear like it would work better outside the limits of this week's theme. Wonderful work.

Tuesday, December 23, 2008Sekiyoku is new to the derbies. She just started a few derbies ago and already has her first print. Here's a few more facts...
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
70 (Seven Deadly Sins) / 4 / 1. For some reason I had been reluctant to enter the contest in the past but decided to finally do an entry for no reason. I bought Night Shift as my first real woot shirt purchase. I also have One Fish, Two Fish, the Welcome to America 2145 one, and the F5 refreshes you shirt.

Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
1973 / 17-31 / 2. My first derby was in 1973. Didn't win, though. Damn Secretariat. I've bought somewhere between 17 and 31 shirts -- not sure -- at least enough to make a shirt fort. I've been printed twice. My first was "Thriller..." although I believed they called it "Ah Hee Hee" to avoid a lawsuit from "The Gloved One." 'Cause as we all know, MJ is hurting for greenbacks. I heard he sold Bubbles to the studio behind "Space Chimps." But seriously, can you imagine anything scarier than being sued by Michael Jackson? Well, maybe having him show up unannounced for Thanksgiving. That would be terrifying.

Wednesday, December 17, 2008Derby 73's theme was
"Optimism". Though this theme was hardly original it did work -- it inspired artists to create some great designs that they might not have otherwise. I had a lot of favorites this week -- here's the best of the best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Love Comes Quickly" Award
BootsBoots' designs are always interesting but this one is a little crisper than her other work with an unusual design and subdued colors. One of her best.

Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
70 (Seven Deadly Sins) / 4 / 1. I've bought one shirt (Zenne's OMG shirt), as well as 3 randoms, all of which were good to me. My collection is growing very slowly, I know, but it'll get there eventually.
What are your tools of choice?
I use a Cintiq 12WX, and a combination of
Photoshop and Open Canvas for my designs.

Wednesday, December 10, 2008Derby 72's theme was
"Book Titles Re-interpreted". Though this theme was hardly original it did work -- it inspired artists to create some great designs that they might not have otherwise. The "Now That's A Tight Formation" Award
Gargrazz is back with a distinctive design that stands on its own as a beautiful shirt but also does an excellent job of representing his chosen book, "Catch 22". The red tape is a great addition for color and interest.

Many of you are probably familiar with the new T-shirt company,
Cameesa.
For those who are not, Cameesa is taking "crowdsourcing" for t-shirts to the next level -- designers upload their designs to Cameesa and people decide which ones they'd like to support with their dollars.
What does "support" mean? Here's a few more details:
- You support the shirt with $20. For that, you get the shirt when it is ready with free shipping PLUS 3 cents for every shirt sold. With enough sales, supporting a shirt could be an investment.
- If the shirt doesn't look like it will eventually print, you can pull your support and move it to another shirt or get a refund.
"Listen to the B-side" is a shirt I tried at both DBH and Threadless. I got some really nice comments and decent votes at both locations so I thought I'd see if there is a market for it elsewhere. Please click on it to take a look and support it. Or if not, a nice comment would be cool. Thanks.
Also,
contact me if you have any more questions and comments on
Cameesa.
Thursday, December 04, 2008Here's a couple of great
Best Losers from the last few months that are now available at commercial sites for sale. LunchBoxBrain's "Take A Picture" is for sale at
Loiter while RGlee129's "Summer-Ai" won at South African contest site
SpringLeap (it's not shipping yet but is available for pre-buy). Check 'em out!
Wednesday, December 03, 2008Derby 71's theme was
"Thrift". Ugh. Another crappy theme idea to chase away the artists. Allowing text helped a little in that people will be able to figure out what the shirt is about after the derby is over. Woot can you please have an "artist challenge" type theme next? You know, where we can only work with one color and one line width and one arm tied behind our back? Anything to break this string of bad theme ideas. I still found a few favorites -- here's what I got. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "This Is DEFINITELY Not The Droid You're Looking For" Award
I can't resist a blatant Star Wars reference and Rglee129's "R1D1" is chock-full of cleverness. Nice work as always.

Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
43 (Slogans) / 4 / 1. Well, my first derby was the text only derby but both of mine got rejected, so let's not count that. I had a baby in June so I wasn't keeping up with the derbies for a while. My next derby was Autumn (Derby #60 in September). You can see two of my entries in my signature. I had 2 entries in the Movie titles derby, and one in the art as text derby as well. I got votes and nice comments, but nowhere near enough to win.
