Wednesday, December 30, 2009Derby 127's theme was
"Renew". A benign theme made difficult with the added limitation of working with only a single color ink. White ink is a somewhat difficult color to do your entire design in. It's obvious that many of the entries were drawn in black ink and just recolored white -- the final look was unsatisfactory. There were some shirts that used the ink color to their advantage. Here's my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Runs On Unleaded Dr. Pepper" Award
CapedCrusader514's "Man, I Really Love Dinosaurs" is a crisp drawing that appears to be more than a single color. It has a great "tall" layout on the shirt too that will look great printed.

Wednesday, December 23, 2009Derby 126's theme was
"Events of 2009 Illustrated". It's really feast or famine with these derby topics, isn't it? If you're thinking this is too topical to be relevant outside the derby, you'd be right. There were a few shirts that are still going to be fun to wear after 2009 is over. Here's those few. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Sky City" Award
PatrickPens' "Neo-Australia" takes a barely related news story from 2009 and turns into a peek into a city of the future. One of the most effective and attractive uses of an orange shirt I've seen. Good use of color and gradients to create depth and interest.

Wednesday, December 16, 2009Derby 125's theme was
"Birds". Hmm, weird trend here. Woot picks a theme that codifies what people are creating too much of already (last week "naughty and nice" and now "birds") and somehow the artists break out of their rut and produce new creative stuff? Hey, whatever works! Woot and artists please keep it up! I struggled to limit the BLAs this week to a manageable amount. Here's the ones I was able to narrow down but there are many others I would have liked to award as well. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Battle Of Epicness" Award
Beefmoe64's "Delusions of Grandeur" wins on all sides -- it's a lovely piece of art and wonderful entertainment as well. I love the bird's expression and the flow on the shirt. Will buy!

Wednesday, December 09, 2009Derby 124's theme was
"Naughty and Nice". Wow, you can never judge a derby by it's theme. This theme sounded pretty groanworthy -- pick a theme that is ALREADY the topic of almost every shirt Woot prints. However, the artists took this and came up with original, artistic, and interesting designs (not universally of course!). Here's all of my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Oh No, They Say He's Got To Go" Award
On first glance, "Destructive Frolic" might seem somewhat cliched but it has lots of nice twists to the typical monster-destroying-a-city meme like a submarine collection in a bag of water and a butterfly net being used to catch an airplane. The city details are top notch and the colors are bright and fun. Great job.

Tuesday, December 08, 2009More new features! The BestLosers' twitter feed is now live at
http://twitter.com/bestlosers. It contains blog entries, new Buy Gallery entries, and new Vote Gallery entries. Check it out!
Also, the RSS feed has been significantly upgraded to show a picture and the pre-break text.
Subscribe if that's your preferred way of keeping up-to-date. Unfortunately, the RSS feed only includes blog entries. I'll be adding
separate RSS feeds for the Buy and Vote galleries as well so you can pick and choose what you want to look at.

Monday, December 07, 2009I'm busy adding some long-overdue features to BestLosers. From now on, there will be comments available on each post. This is all hand-coded so there may be some hiccups. Please help me test the system by saying "hi!" in the comments below. It will be nice to see if anyone actually comes around and reads this blog!

Wednesday, December 02, 2009Derby 123's theme was
"Christmas Songs Illustrated". Like the other "Illustrated" themes, the idea was to illustrate the lyrics of a Christmas song without using text. Not sure if it's low holiday participation, lousy themes, the new fog system, or what, but the last few derbies have been very underwhelming. Here's a handful of exceptions. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Try To Laugh And Call Me Names Now" Award
Sokowa shows us what the "off season" Rudolph looks like. Pleasant subdued colors and a fun idea.
