December 2011
Friday, December 30, 2011We just donated
$100 to
the American Red Cross. I rounded up the amount collected significantly to take into account those of you who might still buy one.
I have mixed feelings about the way the calendar sale went. I'm personally thrilled to have mine and will be enjoying this great art all year. However, the amount of work that went into putting it together for the relatively small amount sold makes it unlikely I'd do this again. I'd love to hear any comments on whether anyone thinks this would be worth repeating, what could have been better, and any other tips.

Wednesday, December 28, 2011Derby 231's theme was
"Over-Indulgence". Although the rules were pretty lax, over-indulgence can be a hard thing to illustrate. Some artists tried to shoehorn in the allowed pop culture references but many others made a solid effort for some interesting results. I (mostly) avoided the pop culture references in my picks. The "Sleepless in Seattle" Award
TobeFonseca's "Coffee Hangover" surprises with it's unique composition, simplicity, and color. Charming and very wearable.

Monday, December 26, 2011Here's a couple shirts selected from from the
Derby 223 Loser Awards that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Double-Take Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!

Wednesday, December 21, 2011Derby 230's theme was
"Winter Redux". Woot takes a break from the pop-heavy topics for a simple rerun from the past. With no text, no pop culture, and no HOLIDAYS (I'm guessing just because there's not enough time), it ended up being somewhat limiting but the artists dealt with it nicely. Here's my favorites and yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Greensleeves" Award
A classy artistic nature shirt from LittleClyde with a little twist -- when you look closer to see why a tree would have green leaves in winter, you get a little extra joke. A fun idea illustrated beautifully. OmarFeliciano adds, "This represents winter way better than ninjas or bunnies."

Wednesday, December 14, 2011Derby 229's theme was
"Roleplaying in Everyday Life". Although this derby was about as wide open as you can get rule-wise, it didn't get too bad -- thankfully the artists were more interested in exploring actual roleplaying ideas instead of trying to shoehorn in something from somewhere else. I have a bit of a weakness for roleplaying -- being a long-time AD&D fan -- so I liked more than I usually would for a pop-heavy topic like this. Here's my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "No Saving Throw" Award
SpiritGreen's "Critical Hit" is a wonderful twist on the dinosaur/asteroid meme. I love the colors and composition on this as well as the nerdy dinosaur characters. The triceratops facial hair is the best; that's a good look for him!

Tuesday, December 06, 2011Double-takes lose their excitement even earlier than a regular derby so here's your BLA post a day early.
Derby 228 was the
Double-Take Derby #15 where all the shirts that Woot liked but didn't get printed get a second chance. Yesterday, I talked about the top 5 shirts they missed. Today, it will be the top 5 shirts (again in no particular order) that don't look likely to be printed but really should be. In addition, I have predictions for what shirts are likely to be printed next week when Woot picks their Editor's Choices. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.

Monday, December 05, 2011This is
Double-Take Derby #15 and since not every shirt can come back for another chance there are a few entries that are sorely missed. This is the top 5 shirts (in no particular order) that I'm sorry aren't here for a second chance -- the Shoulda Been Awards.
What are the shirts you miss since the last Double-Take? Add a comment below of another shirt that didn't make it this far.
Tomorrow, instead of the normal Best Loser Awards there will be another top 5 list -- the top 5 shirts from this Double Take that should have printed but were not.
