Derby 101 Loser Awards
Derby 101's theme was
"Fake Bands". It's been a long time since even incidental text has been allowed much less a theme that leaves things open to all-text slogan shirts. Thankfully, the theme was specific enough and Woot was strict enough to keep things pretty clean. One additional necessary wrinkle is that the band must not exist -- pretty tough when you look around -- there's a lot of bands out there. Anyway, I really enjoyed the entries this week and had trouble limiting my picks to a reasonable number but here's my favorites as well as yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Indestructible Drummer" Award
As I write this, "The Sex Drugs" is battling with FOUR other shirts for third. I'm throwing my vote behind this great shirt. Wonderful stylized colors and textures. Very much the kind of shirt I like. Great work from newcomer LeonRyan.
The BLAs
I've given up calling the rest of the shirts the "honorable mentions" as if they aren't really as great shirts as the lead-in shirt. Everyone mentioned today will be getting one of these in their Shirt.Woot entry comments and their
ShirtDerbyStats' badge list.

Threadless designer ValorAndVellum drops in to show us how's it's done. Great '70s vibe on this.
| Bizarre psychedelic pictures and words make for the best band shirts as "Captain Salt" will show you.

Great linework on this skull -- I'd love to see it show up on another site minus the text some day.
| "The Neckbeard Brothers" have some serious 'tude. I love the colors and expressions on the bro's faces. Great stuff.

Rissa loves Darthapo's "Rock of Mages" for all it's obvious D&D goodness.
| Riffmaster18's "The Prentensions" explicitly states all the snooty exclusiveness of obscure bands in black-and-white. Great idea well executed.

The Mighty Mighty Eucharists shirt is cute with a religious reference that is neither preachy or sacrilegious -- pretty unusual. I'd love to see this again on RedIsWhite or such site where it would be more likely to get printed.
| Drakxxx somehow pulls off Emo Koala's in "The Eucalyptus Melancholy" without it being overly goofy. Great details.

If you'd like your favorite shirt to show up here next week,
send in your nominations by mid-Tuesday. Give me some reasons why it is the greatest thing Woot will ever see and I'll include the best ones. Longer entries are more likely to make it outside the Honorable Mention section just for formatting reasons. Please include a link to the derby entry.
