February 2009
Wednesday, February 25, 2009Derby 83's theme was
"Exercise". The theme didn't seem to inspire the artists this week and allowing free reign for text didn't improve things. I thought we'd see at least a really good slogan or two but that didn't happen either. Anyway, here's the few bright spots I found this week. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "All That And He Still Refuses To Help Clean Up Afterwards" Award
A fantastic detailed illustration from TGentry. Nice subtle color choices to avoid overwhelming the shirt with the large print.

Saturday, February 21, 2009Riffmaster18 has been around Shirt.Woot almost since the beginning and has had several shirts printed. He recently opened his
own shop that sells not only screenprints of some of his old Derby designs, but also framed prints and acrylic paintings. Here's a couple of his designs available now. Shipping is free for t-shirts. Also, you can use code BLCOM to get 15% off. Check it out!
If your shirt or someone else's old derby shirt is available for sale somewhere please let me know so I can get the word out.
Thursday, February 19, 2009When I saw that actor/author
Wil Wheaton had created a shirt for Woot, I had to know more. It seems Woot contacted him to see if he had a shirt he'd like to get on Woot and he happened to have an appropriately nerdy idea. Is this part of a new trend of celebrity Woot dailies? Hmm... Time will tell.
Anyway, here's a very shirt-focused interview with Wil. If you want to know more about
SBM or
TNG, you'll have to talk to him yourself.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
NA / 2 / 1. I only have one other Woot shirt, but I love it: it has an Octopus on it, and
his tentacles spell out "Octopus" if you look very closely. I <3 cephalopods, so that one was a no-brainer for me. I would have more, but I already own so many t-shirts, they take up three drawers in my house. There's also the box in my office, and the bag in the garage. I rotate them around every couple of months and — you know, it's pretty clear that I have a problem. Let's just leave it at that.

Wednesday, February 18, 2009Derby 82's theme was
"Individuality". A nice general theme that can inspire artists to do something new without being too limiting. No text as usual. There were some great shirts this week but also an unusually high number that made me scratch my head -- if a t-shirt fan like me can't figure out what the shirt's about, the average person who checks out your shirt from the corner of their eye definitely won't. Anyway, here's the shirts you and I liked best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Presidents Of The United States Of America" Award
Grayehound's "Mr. Rushmore, the Indivisable Man" gets props all around for a great title, fantastic illustration, cool woodblock texture, subtle colors, and all on a yellow shirt. Grayehound keeps getting better every week -- it's just a matter of time before he or she gets printed.

Monday, February 16, 2009Lokklyn has only been here a few derbies but already has her first win -- here's some more about her.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
#77 (Alternate History) / 1 / 1. While my first entry into #77 (Alternate History) was nothing spectacular, a near-fourth finish in derby #78 (Winter) gave me confidence to keep going. In my fourth derby, I won third place! It was a huge accomplishment for me. I haven't bought any shirts so far from Woot, unless the freebies of my own count! I already have an absurd amount of Threadless t-shirts (35+) -- it's become increasingly difficult to justify the purchase of additional shirts. I've only been checking Shirt.Woot regularly for about a month, and I'm positive I'll cave in at some point. I've had one shirt printed so far, and am hoping the future will be kind to me.

Since I had so much luck with my
last shirt on Cameesa, I thought I'd try my
old Woot design,
Cat Carrier. As you probably know, Woot gives daily artists the option to keep their shirt for 50% less profits. I was foolish enough to take the cut in pay. But for any of you who would like a nostalgic shirt from the classic days of Woot, it's your lucky day! The design has been slightly updated with a "cat star" sleeve print.
If you're not already familiar with
Cameesa, it works by fans "supporting" (prebuying) a shirt for $20 in return for a cut of the profits. See my original post,
Trying Out Cameesa, for more info.
Wednesday, February 11, 2009Derby 81's theme was
"Heartbreak". Not my favorite theme but the extra week of notice gave us a good number of entries and a few truly creative ones. No text again. Here's the shirts I liked best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Fred Dropped Dead" Award
DeadFrog had a trio of unique and creative designs this week. "Death of an imaginary friend" was my favorite of the three. This is a powerful image with great linework and bold color choices.

Monday, February 09, 2009GeekFactor12 is one of the few Woot old-timers that is still around -- she has been participating since derby number one and still is. This is her 8th shirt but her first interview -- even though she is the artist of one of the
best selling Woot shirts of all time, she still has never finished first in a derby (for the longest time I only interviewed the first place winners). Here's a few more interesting facts about her.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
1 (One) / 50+ / 8. My first derby was the first derby. Haha. I made a charming cyclops on a unicycle, that I think a grand total of three people voted for. Despite the massive failure, I was hooked on the derby from there on out -- and I'm still thinking about revising that cyclops. I just counted and I have bought over 50 Woot t-shirts. Which is, of course, terrifying. I've had 8 shirts printed, with two of those being collaborations.

Wednesday, February 04, 2009Derby 80 was the
Double-Take Derby #4 where all the shirts that Woot liked but didn't get printed get a second chance. Yesterday, I talked about the top 5 shirts they missed. Today, it will be the top 5 shirts (again in no particular order) that don't look likely to be printed but really should be. In addition, I have predictions for what shirts are likely to be printed next week when Woot picks their Editor's Choices. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.

Tuesday, February 03, 2009We're in the middle of
Double-Take Derby #4 and since not every shirt can come back for a another chance there are a few entries that are sorely missed. This is the top 5 shirts (in no particular order) that I'm sorry aren't here for a second chance -- the Shoulda Been Awards.
Tomorrow instead of the normal Best Loser Awards there will be another top 5 list -- the top 5 shirts that should have printed but were not. You're welcome to try to sway me with your nominations but there will be no award names or write-ups so don't bother sending those.

Tuesday, February 03, 2009Drakxxx has been working very hard to finally get his first print -- he's been here over 5 months, does very detailed drawings, and often enters more than one shirt per derby. Here he is to tell you more about himself.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
58 (Work) / 2 / 1. I first entered the "Work" derby, with little knowledge of specifics of designing t-shirt prints. My submission to the derby was the first time I ever gave t-shirt designing a go. I've bought two so far, but I'm sure more will find their way to me in the future.

Monday, February 02, 2009I won't bother to post a picture since
Cameesa has a nice one, but I received my "Listen to the B-side" on Friday and am thrilled with the way it came out. Looks really sharp in person -- like something you'd wear to a club. Cameesa has all the shirt info screenprinted under the label inside the shirt. They leave the tiny American Apparel label attached. Overall, a very professional presentation.
I've already had people ask what the returns are for supporting a shirt, so I'll report out here what I get in a month. Stay tuned!
Monday, February 02, 2009AdderXYU got a Best Loser Award for "Job Selection" back in
Derby 58. Now it is for sale at Loiterink. One of my own former derby entries is also for sale there. Click on the images to check 'em out. Also, you can change the shirt color before you order (thankfully).
If your former derby entry is now for sale somewhere, make sure to
give me a holler so I can let everyone else know.
