Interview with the 2nd place winner of Derby 47
Here's a catchup interview with BeefCoat who was printed last in derby 47. Here's a few facts about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
27 (Dreams) / 7 / 4. After watching a couple of weeks I finally submitted my first design in the "dreams" derby. I submitted on Tuesday which I quickly found out was too late to hope to win anything.
What are you tools of choice?
I started in
Photoshop but now I use a combo of both Photoshop and
Illustrator. Plus I just recently got myself a
Wacom Cintiq tablet with the winnings from the "Greed" derby.
What is your typical process for going about a design?
I usually will sketch out an idea with a pencil and paper. Then I take the rough sketch and scan it into my computer. At that point I trace the sketch in either Photoshop using my wacom tablet or in Illustrator using the pen tool. After I have outlined the sketch the way I like it I export it to Photoshop and begin to play with colors. After I get the colors to a place that I like I format it for posting. I also use a site called Imageshack to upload a vote button that I can use in my signature so when I make a comment it will allow others to go straight to my design.
What design or art experience do you have outside the derby?
I have drawn since before I can remember. As far as professional experience, I have only done a few freelance projects, mostly illustrations and logos.
Which artists or designers inspire you?
I love Disney's cartoon art style. I have also always admired M.C. Esher and Van Gogh. I have also learned a ton from my brother.
Would you like to do art/design full-time? If so, what is your dream job?
I recently got back from Disneyland and I would love to design theme rides or movie sets. That would be my dream job from an artistic point of view.
Any plans to ever sell your designs using a print-to-order shop like SpreadShirt or CafePress?
I honestly don't know how those websites work. I know a lot of friends who would like to own the shirts that I have designed that have gone out of print on Woot. I think it would be fun to have my designs more widely printed.
What advice do you have for new derby artists?
If you look me up in the archives of
ShirtDerbyStats you will see that I have far more designs that have bombed than those that have been printed. Keep designing! The key is to find a clever concept and have fun making the concept a reality in your design.
