Interview with the 3rd place winner of Derby 64
BadTChap has been around for a few months and this is her first print. Here's more about her.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
46 (Green) / 5 / 1. In the Green derby I did a graphic of fish swimming in toxic sludge and submitted it really late. Can't remember how many votes I got, but it wasn't very impressive!
What are you tools of choice?
I wish a
tablet was, but I don't have the cash for that. I'd say pen and pencil plus
Illustrator. Illustrator makes more sense to me than
Photoshop. My brain gets it. When I try and do something in Photoshop I get frustrated and think about how I could get it done in a second in Illustrator. But I'm trying to change that to take my design up a notch. It's coming along slowly.
What is your typical process for going about a design?
Sketch, scan, mess with it on the screen.
What design or art experience do you have outside the derby?
Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, freelance for the past 6 years or so doing logos, ads, any kind of print work.
Which artists or designers inspire you?
Audrey Kawasaki's stuff is beautiful. For someone a bit more historic, I like Alphonse Mucha. As an advertising artist today, I wish there was more need for that kind of beauty in design now. But I try and sneak it in when I can.
Would you like to do art/design full-time? If so, what is your dream job?
I've worked for design firms in the past. Once it becomes a job working for someone else, it's not as fun anymore. So I design
through my own company, pick my clients carefully and try to keep it all "good times."
Any plans to ever sell your designs using a print-to-order shop like SpreadShirt or CafePress?
Not at the moment, but you never know. I have a space in a local art gallery in my town and I sell my work there... photography, greeting cards, anything I feel like making.
What advice do you have for new derby artists?
Do your own thing, work at developing a style and try not to get discouraged. There are a lot of opinions out there. Listen to them, but don't let them rule how you judge yourself or your work. At the end of the day you're the one who has to be happy with it, so have fun!
