January 2009
Wednesday, January 28, 2009Derby 79's theme was
"Myth". That's not a theme I would have expected to produce so many interesting entries -- I was pleasantly surprised. Strangely enough, there was no official word on how text would be treated this time. Amazingly, nobody abused the privilege and went crazy with slogan shirts. It was really tough to limit the number of awards this week but here's the ones you and I liked best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Fryer Tuck" Award
Picasserole's "Red Robin Hood" is a stunningly detailed entry mixing myth and nature and realism and cuteness all in one crisp package. A fantastic shirt from this up-and-coming Woot artist.

Wednesday, January 21, 2009Derby 78's theme was
"Winter"-- a boring repeated theme that did not inspire the artists. There's only so much you can do with winter and Woot has pretty thoroughly milked this cow already. That said, here's a few that managed to do something different. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Keep Your Beard Clean" Award
There's quite a few Edgar fans at Woot who like just about everything he does due to his signature sketchy style and joyful melancholy. I feel he brings his A-game to Woot and his entries at other sites just don't have the great artistic details that his Woot ones do. "Old Man Winter is at it again" is another fine example and another shirt I'd be thrilled to own.
Hint hint....

Wednesday, January 14, 2009Derby 77's theme was
"Alternate History". This is the kind of theme that gets artists to be inspired to create something they would have never thought of instead of trying to rework something they've created in the past. Incidental text was allowed. For the last several weeks we've had very strong, artistic shirts it the fog -- I'm impressed with the way the voters have been leaning as well as with the artists for creating works that are both impressive and accessible. Here's the best ones you and I liked. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Starry Night Or Gnats? I Can't Tell -- I Have No Depth Perception" Award
I try to avoid giving any kudos to shirts in the fog since they don't need any extra publicity. I've broken this rule a few times for shirts that really needed to be called out and TheInfinityLoop's "Vincent's Alternative" is one of those. This design does a great job of capturing Van Gogh's style without copying a specific painting -- pretty difficult to do with only 6 colors. Excellent work!

Tuesday, January 13, 2009DeadFrog has only been here a couple of months but has already scored two prints. Here's a few more interesting facts about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
69 (Miniature Worlds) / 7 / 2. I started with the Miniature Worlds one. If you look at my shirt comp from then, you can see that I had no Idea what I was doing (I'm still not quite sure what I'm doing). But then it got an honorable mention anyway, so I was pretty happy. I've ordered 7 shirts from shirt.woot so far. I may never have to go to Old Navy again. Two of my designs have been printed,The Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe one and The Ninja Turtles one. I'm working on one to submit as a daily, but it's far from completion.

Wednesday, January 07, 2009CrunchyBiteSized is new to Woot but has already had two shirts printed! Here's some more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
70 (7 Deadly Sins) / 3 / 2. My first submission was for derby #70, the seven deadly sins. I only submitted one design that first time. Since then, I've tried to submit at least two, preferring four or five. So far I've bought three shirt designs. I haven't been able to afford more, however as soon as I get paid from Woot, I'll be purchasing more for sure.

Wednesday, January 07, 2009Derby 76's theme was
"Beginning". A nice general theme that leaves the artist plenty of room to experiment. No text as usual. Some strong contenders in the top 20 but the number of original designs in the rest of the derby were on the low side. Here's the few I liked best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Bombadil" Award
Despite the controversy in the forums, Ramyb's "Genesis in the Mind" is a beautiful and interesting shirt with subtle colors. Ramyb is on an incredible roll here with back-to-back prints. This shirt probably ends that roll but doesn't deserve to.

Saturday, January 03, 2009It's been less than a month since I submitted a shirt at
Cameesa and it is just two supporters away from being printed! As I spoke about
here, Cameesa works by getting 25 people to "support" your shirt with $20. That $20 gets them a shirt with free shipping plus three cents for every shirt sold.
Granted I have somewhat of an advantage to the average Wooter by using my blog to advertise my shirt, but I'd like to pass that advantage on to all of you as well. Here's the next couple Woot shirts that are likely to be printed -- both with about 40% support already.
Please support these shirts and try out your old Woot designs on Cameesa!
