Wednesday, January 27, 2010Derby 131's theme was
"Palindromes". In this theme, the inspiration for the textless drawing had to be a palindrome. That all but guaranteed this would be the "absurd olympics". There's a danger here for some shirts that they only work if you know the title or know of the derby. Here's our favorite shirts that work with or without crib notes. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "That Doesn't Taste Like Beef" Award
Omnitarian's "Taco Cat" is a simple enough idea that you're not going to need a title to help. He did a great job with this -- the cat is the right mixture of animate and inanimate, cute and repulsive, and crisp (yum!) and chaotic. Great work! I look forward to seeing this printed.

Wednesday, January 20, 2010Derby 130's theme was
"Nightmares". You can obviously expect a lot of frightening and morbid designs with a theme like this but there were plenty of amusing and artistic shirts as well. I found many shirts to like. Here's our favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Scratchy And Poochie Show" Award
Woot newcomer BubuSam makes a splash with the crisp and hilarious "Friendly Makeover". Lots of cool details like the paper curls, the cat's reflection, and, of course, the lighter. I'd love to see BubuSam come back and show us more next derby!

Thursday, January 14, 2010A few days ago I listed the Top 5 shirts that Woot printed. Today's list is the Top 10 great derby shirts of 2009 that were not printed and can't be bought anywhere (yet).
Hopefully, this list will inspire the artists to consider putting their shirt up for sale or re-entering them in an alternate contest. Also, if I missed something and one or more of these shirts actually IS available somewhere, please let me know. The good news is that a few of these shirts MIGHT be soon available and I've included a few comments where appropriate.
Keep reading to see the remaining nine forgotten shirts of 2008. Clicking the shirts will open the original derby page for that shirt.

Wednesday, January 13, 2010Derby 129's theme was
"Ancient Egypt". A great theme -- we've had shirts coincidentally touch on Egyptian themes and images in the past but this is a full theme on it. It obviously got everyone's creative juices flowing since I found a lot of unique shirts I liked. Here's my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Queen Of Denial" Award
KaseyFleming's "Quadesh" is a beautiful detailed illustration that flows nicely on a shirt as well. Fantastic subtle colors and halftones and a slow faded to outline add to the perfection. I'd really love to see this printed.

Tuesday, January 12, 2010Artulo has been participating in the derbies almost since the beginning. He's had a couple Editor's Choice prints but this is his first Derby win! Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
19 (Travel) / 40 / 3. I got 5 votes on my first entry in the Travel derby. This is my 3rd print -- I've had two Editor's Choice prints previously.
What are your tools of choice?
Pencil/paper/scanner and then an old Wacom Bamboo Fun
tablet. I use Adobe
Illustrator almost exclusively, except for the comp images -
Photoshop is much better for that. Vector designing is easier for me because it can be resized cleanly and without detail loss or fuzziness appearing.

Monday, January 11, 2010I almost forgot to do some end-of-the-year best-of lists! Today, the best shirts that Woot actually printed. Tomorrow, the best shirts that weren't so lucky.
The interesting thing about this list (besides the fact that I own most of them) is that there are only two derby shirts here. Odd because I didn't care so much for daily shirts early on -- I was more likely to buy Editor's Choice and occasional derby winners before buying a daily. But the derby winners aren't quite as distinctive as they used to be and the more interesting stuff seems to be coming in the dailies.
Keep reading to see my other four favorites of 2009. Clicking the shirts will open the (now sold out) sale page.

Wednesday, January 06, 2010Derby 128's theme was
"Things that start with the letter 'V'". A wide open theme -- with a little creativity almost anything could have been entered this week. Interesting that the flexibility led many of the entries to tend toward the bizarre and absurd -- in a good way. Here's my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "King Of The Concrete Jungle" Award
RobSoul's "Vengeance is Mine" has some wonderful faces -- the lion's smug look is a nice counterpoint to the tourists and hunters' looks of mostly surprise. Many other great details here: the lion's medals, the tourist's camera, and the wallpaper are all fantastic. Print!

Monday, January 04, 2010BestLosers' "birthday" was way back in September but I didn't have much to say about plans for BestLosers' 3rd year at that point. Now that a new calendar year has started, I finally have a few things to mention.

Sunday, January 03, 2010I started my own personal blog to participate in MSCE (Make Something Cool Everyday) and write about other non-tshirt related subjects that wouldn't fit in with BestLosers. Check it out at
