January 2011
Monday, January 31, 2011Here's some shirts from the past that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Do-Over Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!
Now the "Still Want" Awards get a bit tougher since any BLAs I've given out have frequently also received HMs and are reserved for the next Double Take. Thankfully, Woot seems to have stopped cribbing my list so there are still a couple left.

Wednesday, January 26, 2011Derby 183's theme was
"Stars". We've had enough similar themes to this that I thought we'd see lots of similar inspirations or at least some nice reworks of past designs. But for some reason this felt like the "mail in" derby -- it didn't feel like most of the artists were bothering to bring their A-game this week. Of course there were a few exceptions and you and I have picked out the best of them. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Star Power Issue Number One" Award
Robbie Lee and Kasey Fleming are two guys who always bring their A-game and this week we have the bonus of having them combine their talents into one fantastic entry. I love the comic book cover feel to this. The recolored resub gave this a bit more oomph but I have to wonder if the double entries guaranteed them a fogless week.

Friday, January 21, 2011There were some fantastic shirts in all the Shirt.Woot Derbies this year. A few were printed but many did not. Here's a list is the Top 10 great derby shirts of 2010 that were not printed and can't be bought anywhere (yet).
Hopefully, this list will inspire the artists to consider putting their shirt up for sale or re-entering them in an alternate contest. Also, if I missed something and one or more of these shirts actually IS available somewhere, please let me know.
Keep reading to see the remaining nine forgotten shirts of 2010. Clicking the shirts will open the original derby page for that shirt.

Friday, January 21, 2011Lagbert has been participating in the derbies for over a year and has just got his first print. Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
118 (Visual Puns) / 54 / 1. My first design was a
"Murder of Crows". Although it didn't do very well, the few votes I did get made me want to keep on trying.
What are your tools of choice?
Traditional Media:
- Pentel Technica-X - hands down the best mechanical pencil available
- Black pencil lead
- Blue pencil lead
- Copic 0.2
- Micron 005
- Tracing paper

Wednesday, January 19, 2011Derby 182's theme was
"Fire". Simple, solid theme and an appropriately solid bunch of contenders. Here's my favorite shirts and yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Fox The Fox" Award
BassAnimation's "Fox Maiden" has fantastic flow and composition along with a stunning palette. BA has always been skilled but it's nice to see her truly take on the t-shirt as a canvas here.

Wednesday, January 12, 2011Derby 181's theme was
"Mazes and Labyrinths". This time I was sure that the theme was way too limiting -- and I was partly right -- but there were plenty of very wearable shirts this week as well. Here's my favorites and yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Giant Goblins! Ha! Let's See How They Feel About The Cold Steel Of My Thin... Tiny... Blade?" Award
MichaelEvans (AKA DeadFrog) stuns us with this monochromatic masterpiece. The maze is included here and is part of the design's power but it's really the lone figure on the tower that is the focus and the giant goblins that soon become visible as you look closer. Fantastic pencilwork, composition, and idea!

Tuesday, January 11, 2011Fungusamongus is a new artist who already has his first print. Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
160 (The End of the World) / 2 / 1. My first derby was derby #160. I believe it was a great derby to start in as I witnessed the explosion of the Pandemonium shirt which has been doing well on the Reckoning ever since. I've only bought 2 Woot shirts so far (namely for budget and closet space reasons as I am a college student).

It's a crime that two stunning shirts like these remain unprinted. Hopefully the artists will resub these somewhere and we can still have our chance to wear them.

Wednesday, January 05, 2011Derby 180's theme was
"Complementary Colors". It's nice to see Woot flipping through all the artistic challenges they've used in the past -- techniques, styles, and now color limitations. This time it's any one of the following complementary color combos: blue/orange, red/green, or yellow/purple. In the hands of a skilled artist, 2 colors plus the shirt color doesn't feel limiting at all. Lots of great artistic and odd designs this time. Here's my favorites and yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Atlantis Travel Bureau" Award
JimmyTan's "Light On" is wonderfully nonsensical with fine, realistic linework contrasting with bold blocks of color. The purple and yellow go fantastic on the heather. Great work.
