Monday, January 30, 2012Here's a couple shirts selected from from the
Derby 228 Loser Awards that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Double-Take Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!

Wednesday, January 25, 2012Derby 235's theme was
"Dubious Honors". I can't quite call it a "wide open" theme since the topic is somewhat obscure and the rejectionator was out in full force to keep people from trying to shoehorn random references, but with text and pop culture allowed, there was still a lot of freedom. Mostly that freedom was wasted. I did feel like there was a fair amount of experimentation being done by the artists but most of it didn't really work. Here's a few exceptions. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Double Deuce" Award
Kevlar51's "The Most Even Prime Number" took a few days to grow on me. The combination of big bold text, the colors, and the math joke finally won me over.

Monday, January 23, 2012For those who are curious, here's my original write-up that Woot picked from for the Panelist Picks.
Despite all my weekly complaining, Woot has asked me back for another year to opine on my top shirts of the year. Like last year, I don't own many of these and hope to remedy that if Woot chooses to print them. In addition to my top 5 for the year, I also mention some alternative (non-t-shirt) print suggestions as well as a few shirts from the BestLoser archives that have never printed that I'd love to see finally make it to print.

Wednesday, January 18, 2012Derby 234's theme was
"Underwater". Great theme with lots of solid entries... with one big "but". I understand light filtering through water is beautiful but now I'm quite sick of seeing that illustrated as typical shiny blue halftones. So you won't see any of those in this week's BLAs. Here's some great designs that avoided that crutch. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Free Killy" Award
It's wonderful to see Artulo back with his signature flowing linework. Also, I love the composition and balance here -- a very wearable shirt.

Monday, January 16, 2012There were some fantastic shirts in all the Shirt.Woot Derbies last year. A few were printed but many did not. Here's a list is the Top 10 great derby shirts of 2011 that were not printed and can't be bought anywhere.
Hopefully, this list will inspire the artists to consider putting their shirt up for sale or re-entering them in an alternate contest. Also, if I missed something and one or more of these shirts actually IS available somewhere, please let me know.
Keep reading to see the remaining nine forgotten shirts of 2011. Clicking the shirts will open the original derby page for that shirt.

Wednesday, January 11, 2012Derby 233's theme was
"Things That Start with the Letter A". These letter derbies are essentially wide open -- a little extra work in your title and description and you can shoehorn in just about anything. The results are usually all over the map as artists do what they want or what is likely to pay well. Usually there's not that much that really interests me in these cases and that was mostly true this time as well. Here a few exceptions I found. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Ghostface Koala" Award
Walmazan's "Apocalyptus" is a fun joke perfectly implemented. I love the background fire glow and how it allows the city to use the shirt color.

Wednesday, January 04, 2012Derby 232's theme was
"Motivation". Initially, this felt like a mailed-in theme after last week's "indulgence" but I found the results much more pleasing. It felt like the artists were experimenting with techniques and composition more than usual. Here are my favorites and yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Ground Control To Major Buck" Award
RGlee129's "Cosmic Carrot" manages to combine cool and cute into one design. Great halftones, composition, and color choices. The almost invisible carrot is a nice bonus for those who look closer.
