July 2009
Thursday, July 30, 2009KaseyFleming has been around for a few months but already has made a splash with his perky style. Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
87 (Art Deco) / 7 / 1. I started with the Art Deco derby; I did a design of
Princess Leia (which actually won a BLA). I was shocked by how well received it was for my first derby entry. If it wasn't for all the positive feedback on my first submission I might have given up on submitting to the derbies entirely. I've bought 6 plus 6 of my own... I didn't realize woot gives a coupon for 3 free shirts if you win a derby untill after I had already purchased 3 of my own on the first day.

Wednesday, July 29, 2009Derby 105's theme was
"Two". A wide open theme in honor of Shirt.Woot's 2nd anniversary -- anything goes as long as it somehow relates to the number two. There were some great shirts this week. Here's my favorites and a couple of yours as well. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Merovingian? Midichlorians? Same thing." Award
I'm not a huge Matrix fan but this is a great crisp illustration of a key scene from the movie. I'd love to see more bold iconic work like this from newcomer YourFlatMate.

Wednesday, July 22, 2009Derby 104's theme was
"Tattoos". Tattoos are not my thing so I'm probably missing some great shirts here that just aren't my style. This would have been a good week for you to submit some nominations to help me out! I've managed to pick out a few myself though. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Truth In Advertising" Award
Great joke, great colors, and actually looks like a tattoo. Well done!

I was finally printed again at Woot. This is my 4th shirt printed there and my 2nd daily. It's of course still for sale for a very short time until it's reckoned. Considering it sold under 800 the first day, that will not be long at all.
Buy one so I can survive a first week's reckoning at least once!
If you're curious, here's a few old blog posts and direct links where you can see my previous prints (from most recent to oldest):
Cat Carrier,
Dissipate, and
Sunset Tree.
Friday, July 17, 2009KrisRobinson just recently started participating in Woot regularly even though he's been here over a year. Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
50 (Energy) / 11 / 2+. For the Energy Derby I drew a design that didn't win, but ended up being tattooed over someone's entire back - which was mind blowing. It's crazy to see something you draw printed on a t-Shirt, it's something else to see it inked into someone's skin. But I didn't consistently enter Woot's Derby until recently. I've bought 11 shirts so far. I have two Honorable Mention coupons waiting in the wings, ready to pounce, as well. My favorite so far was a daily, Bird Brain I think it was called. I love how it looks on the shirt. I had one collab with Kdeuce printed ("Bomb Deco"), and recently, "Evil-o-meter". I submitted a couple of dailies, one of which they have earmarked to print, I don't know when though - it's called "Sacre Bleu!" so keep an eye out for it.

Wednesday, July 15, 2009Derby 103's theme was
"Outer Space". Outer space sounds like a pretty cool theme for a sci-fi fan like me but I was pretty underwhelmed with most of the entries this week (too many cute animals in space!). I did manage to find a few "stars" sparkling in the ether though. Here's my favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Open The Floodgates Of Heaven" Award
I really like the subtle colors and odd abstractness of the design on TheInfinityLoop's "Let the Meteors Fall". Very wearable.

Tuesday, July 14, 2009Raikus won a Best Loser Award way back in the Black and White derby last year and now it's getting printed at the new daily shirt shop,
RiptApparel. Ript works very similarly to
TeeFury:
- The t-shirt is only available for 24 hours and then never again
- The artist keeps full rights to the shirt
- The artist gets paid $1/shirt
Raikus' shirt will be for sale on July 16th so after you check the shirt on Woot Wednesday night, drop by Ript and give Raikus a congrats or pick up your own copy.
If you've had a former Woot Derby shirt printed, please let me know and I'll blog about it here.
Monday, July 13, 2009To celebrate their 2nd birthday,
Shirt.Woot will have artists taking over for a week, choosing dailies, helping with the derby, and serving cake*. It's all starting Monday, July 20 and will run through Thursday, July 23.
Adam
"Apelad" Koford will be the Master of Ceremonies with special appearances by Mark Frauenfelder of
BoingBoing, R. Stevens of
DieselSweeties, and, my favorite, Mitch
"Spacesick" Ansara known for his
"I can read the movies" series of fake novelizations (as pictured).
* Cake will be for Woot staff and guest artists only. Coming to Woot's door and asking for cake will get you arrested. Happy Birthday!
Wednesday, July 08, 2009Derby 102's theme was
"Pressure". Woot admitting it was a last-minute idea plus the initial negative reactions in the response thread, made me think this derby would be a stinker. However, the artists did a great job of getting creative with the theme and there quite a few original and attractive designs entered. Here's our favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Tortoise's Secret Weapon" Award
ZombieGorilla's "Cola Booster" is a breath of fresh air. Great textures and expressions and bright colors that contrast nicely on brown. Fantastic.

Thursday, July 02, 2009Lucky1988 has been participating in the derbies for more than a year and this is his first derby win but 4th print. Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
44 (Summer) / 25 / 4. Here's the breakdown of shirts I've had printed:
- Editors Choice '08: Double-Take Derby 3
- Mystery Derby '09: First place
- 2 dailies (Kris Blingle, Breakfast Club)

Wednesday, July 01, 2009Derby 101's theme was
"Fake Bands". It's been a long time since even incidental text has been allowed much less a theme that leaves things open to all-text slogan shirts. Thankfully, the theme was specific enough and Woot was strict enough to keep things pretty clean. One additional necessary wrinkle is that the band must not exist -- pretty tough when you look around -- there's a lot of bands out there. Anyway, I really enjoyed the entries this week and had trouble limiting my picks to a reasonable number but here's my favorites as well as yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Indestructible Drummer" Award
As I write this, "The Sex Drugs" is battling with FOUR other shirts for third. I'm throwing my vote behind this great shirt. Wonderful stylized colors and textures. Very much the kind of shirt I like. Great work from newcomer LeonRyan.
