July 2010
Wednesday, July 28, 2010Derby 157's theme was
"Reinterpreting Famous Art Titles". A fantastic theme that inspired some very creative entries from the artists. I had real trouble narrowing my BLAs down to a reasonable number. Here's the best of the best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Big Enough Umbrella" Award
CmDixon2 manages week-by-week to cover all the bases with his designs -- artistic, accessible, and wearable. This week his entry, "The Umbrellas" has it all in spades. A simple idea, immediately understood but very artistically done with eye-popping colors. Magnificent!

Monday, July 26, 2010Here's some shirts from the past that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Do-Over Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!
Since Woot HM'd all but one of my BLAs, I've selected a great design by RogerRogerRoger to round out today's shirts.

Wednesday, July 21, 2010Derby 156's theme was
"Three". Woot was looking for anything about the number three in honor of Shirt.Woot's 3rd anniversary. Except for an unusual number of "Goldilocks and the three bears" designs, the shirts had a lot of nice variety. I enjoyed the art and technique on a more than average number of designs but not many had the full package -- idea + art. Here's a few that managed to have it all. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Herbivore's Revenge" Award
Rglee129's "TKO" has some wonderful linework, great use of color, and perfect shirt layout. And somehow he does all this with a SERIOUS take on boxing dinosaurs. I notice a lot of violence in the Robbie Lee shirts that end up here in the BLAs. So, are Robbie's violent shirts his best work or are they just the ones I like best? That's a question for the philosophers...

Wednesday, July 14, 2010Derby 155's theme was
"Kawaii". Woot asked for cute and they got it. Way more entries than usual since so much of what is entered on a weekly basis fits the theme automatically. I didn't think I'd like as many as I did. I think it's my love of simplicity that won me over -- there's a lot of very direct designs here without any extra fat (but plenty of sugar!). Here's my favorites and yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Infectiously Cute" Award
BootsBoots "Viral Kawaii" is a fantastic idea adorably illustrated. Great color choices.

Monday, July 12, 2010KettleToast has been participating in the derbies for a few months and already has his first print. Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
138 (Band Names Reinterpreted) / 8 / 1. The Band Names derby actually opened on the day of my birthday! Sadly, my entry was rejected.
What are your tools of choice?
Gimp and a mouse. But not for long!

Sunday, July 11, 2010NathanWPyle is pretty new to the derbies but had two dailies under his belt before getting a derby win. Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
151 (Job Interview) / 4 / 3. My very first derby was #151 "Shirt you'd wear to a job interview" - my entry was "OFFICE NINJA" and I finished 29th, which made me happy. I have bought only three or four shirts -- I'm still fairly new to this whole phenomenon, but now I'm a big fan! Speaking of -- what are these 'screaming monkeys?'

Wednesday, July 07, 2010Derby 154's theme was
"Cities". A wide-open theme with no limitations on text. Thankfully, Woot nipped the "I LOVE" meme in the bud. Amazingly, there really wasn't that much text in this derby but there were many interesting cityscapes. Here's the ones you and I liked best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Bird City, Kansas" Award
This is Amarillo's theme -- many of his prints at other sites were fantastical cities. This one is wonderfully odd with subdued colors.

Tuesday, July 06, 2010I asked SeedUvPain for an interview almost 2 years ago when his first shirt, "New Kid In Town" was printed. The message was unread all this time due to Woot's lame PM system (no notification system among other weaknesses). He noticed about a week ago and apologized for the accidental snub (if you're wondering why I never interviewed YOU, look closer at your PMs!). Luckily, interviewing him coincided very nicely with his 2nd print. Here's the rest of the details.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
41 (Alphabet) / 4 / 2. My first derby was 'Alphabet' and my entry got rejected. The first derby I saw all the way through was 'Green'. I've had two shirts printed by Woot: "New Kid In Town" and "Shakespeare A-Z".
