Wednesday, June 29, 2011Derby 205's theme was
"Mexico". Woot predicted cute tacos taking the lead but the shirts in the fog are quite artistic and the anthropomorphic food is limited. Lots of variety here but at the same time a limited number of truly unique designs. Here's a few exceptions you and I found. The "Aztec Camera" Award
Qetza returns back to the top spot in the BLAs again this week. Hopefully this week will be a print. This week he takes on his namesake bird with fantastic Aztec-inspired patterns hidden in the feathers and branches.

"I Love Books". The theme was books but all pop culture references (minus Star Wars) as well as text were fair game. I loved the theme and wished I had more time to participate but the results were mixed -- there were a lot of great shirts but too few that really celebrated books. Here's your favorites and mine. The "Astounding Stories" Award
Qetza is a very infrequent contributor to Shirt.Woot. If you check out his
other entries you'll see he definitely has a unique style. This shirt has a cool mid-century sci-fi vibe, both in composition and color. I'd love to wear this one!

Wednesday, June 15, 2011Derby 203's theme was
"Red". Woot was looking for designs that were thematically about the color red as well as either on a red shirt or using only shades of red ink. The thematic rule was important to keep this from turning into a free-for-all. With no restrictions on pop culture (including relaxing the "No Star Wars" rule) you'd think there'd be more to choose from but there wasn't really. Here's my short list of favorites. The "It's A You And Me House" Award
Ochopika hasn't been here very long but I'm seeing their work getting better every week. The composition and detail on this piece are both excellent.

"Anthropomorphic Food". After weeks of "no pop culture" and "no text" rules, Woot lets out for recess with a theme like this and with both text and pop culture allowed. It felt like the artists weren't really ready to "go for it" though -- it's like Woot trained us to restraint and we didn't know what to do with freedom. The results were surprisingly good. The "Mr. Body's Secret Plan To Turn Everyone Against Each Other" Award
Best. Clue Shirt. Ever. Kevlar51 and Walmazan collaborated for this adorable illustration based on the game Clue. Fantastic colors, halftoning, and composition.

Double-Take Derby #13 where all the shirts that Woot liked but didn't get printed get a second chance. Yesterday, I talked about the top 5 shirts they missed. Today, it will be the top 5 shirts (again in no particular order) that don't look likely to be printed but really should be. In addition, I have predictions for what shirts are likely to be printed next week when Woot picks their Editor's Choices.
