March 2009
Tuesday, March 31, 2009Cmdixon2 has been around for almost a year on Woot and this is his very first print. Here's some more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
55b (Derbylympics Oxymoron) / 24+ / 1. I started with the Oxymoron event of the Derbylympics with "Original Copy". I managed to pull in a whopping 14 votes. I've actually only bought 4 for myself (I especially love Radiomode's "Music Industry") but I've bought 20+ shirts for my wife. She's way less picky than me and absolutely obsessed. My one print, "Sunshine" finished 2nd in the Art Deco derby. I was definitely surprised (in a good way) by how well it was received. I haven't submitted any dailies yet. If I have any brilliant ideas, I'll definitely consider it.

Wednesday, March 25, 2009Derby 87's theme was
"Art Deco". Despite lower artist participation, fewer votes, and the handful of shirts that I'm including here, I liked this theme. I think it's a great way to stretch the artists and get them to try different styles. Here's the shirts I liked best this time. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "13th Floor" Award
78LAYERS' "Old-fashioned Drive-by" is an intriguing mix of lines, colors, and shapes, both abstract and realistic. I'd really be curious to see how well something this dark would print.

Tuesday, March 24, 2009Cameesa has lowered the amount needed to support a shirt. It is now $10 + shipping with shipping free until the end of the week. The only thing lost in this change, is that the support payback is now 2 cents instead of 3. This fixes the former flaw in their support model in which the supporter is often paying more for the shirt than the casual buyer (due to sales and such). Support some
Woot shirts while you can for just $10. Pictured in today's post is "Dali Chocobos" by BootsBoots which is moving up quickly in support this week.
Wednesday, March 18, 2009Derby 86's theme was
"TV Show Titles Re-interpreted". Woot is thoroughly milking this "inspired by" idea but I don't blame them -- it gives the artists a lot of freedom and a lot of starting ideas at the same time. Here's the ones you and I liked best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Sadeness" Award
Cmdixon2's moody "Inspired by Monk" has some great colors and nice halftones making for a stylish subtle shirt. I hear the "tentacle" roots were unintentional but they're nevertheless cool.

Tuesday, March 17, 2009As most of you know by now,
Cameesa is one of the better places to buy former Woot shirts. For the artists, you only need 25 supporters to get your shirt printed. For the supporters, you not only get your shirt, but you actually make profits on each shirt sold. Read more on
how it works and
how much I made my first month.

Wednesday, March 11, 2009Derby 85's theme was
"The Circus". That's a pretty narrow theme and it showed. There were lots of duplicate ideas and themes but I was still surprised by the variety. Because of the theme, there weren't that many I'd actually
wear though. Here's the few exceptions to that. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Gatsby" Award
Jewelwing's "The Star of the Show" is a fantastic poster-style design with an Art Deco look. It makes a heather shirt look cool which is an accomplishment in itself.

Wednesday, March 04, 2009Derby 84's theme was
"The Sea". I would have expected this theme to not generate many bright spots -- especially since we've had very similar themes before. There were a couple of resubs/reworks that snuck in but for the most part there were many excellent and creative entries this week. One of the best derbies in some time. I had real trouble narrowing down the list of favorites to a manageable number but, with your input, here's the best of the best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Hoo Hoo By The Beautiful Sea" Award
WarholBot's "Sea Ya Later" has some great detail and a fun mood. I love the sloppy watercolor background.

As promised, here's a report on my first month's commissions at
Cameesa. I made over
$1 in the first month but that includes a partial month of a second shirt I supported. I made
$.66 for 22 shirts on
"Listen to the B-side" and
$.36 for 12 shirts on Edgar's
"Fiction vs. Non-fiction".
This, of course, is support commissions only and doesn't include artist commissions for "B-side". I think the numbers are pretty good for a brand-new shop like Cameesa. I'd be happy just to continue getting a $1/month for supporting a couple shirts -- that will start to add up over time. My only concern is that "B-side" is sold out for almost all men's sizes -- that's got to slow things down until they do a reprint.
Pictured is the completely unrelated shirt of mine,
"Cat Carrier", which needs some more support.
Sunday, March 01, 2009Nramen is another new guy who's been here for just a few derbies and already has his first print. Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
79 (Myths and legends) / 4 / 1. Derby 79 was my first official submittal. I started preparing for the derby with Derby 77, Alternate History. I've bought four shirts, including my shirt today. The other three are "Circuit-latory System," "Me-Too Birds Flee a Pander Tree," and "It was a dark and stormy night...".
What are your tools of choice?
I use Adobe
Illustrator for the final product and Adobe
Photoshop to create the 580 and 240 detail pictures. I like to sketch my ideas beforehand but I switch between using old-fashioned pencil and paper, and a convertible tablet PC (using blank pages on Microsoft OneNote to sketch).
