March 2010
Wednesday, March 31, 2010Derby 140's theme was
"The Letter 'S'". Not quite as many absurd entries this time but still too wide-open a theme -- you can pretty much enter anything with the help of a Thesaurus to find an appropriate "S" word. Nevertheless, there were lots to choose from and many excellent entries this time. Here's my favorites as well as yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Neverending Story" Award
StarDamsel's "S is for Storybook" has some wonderfully detailed silhouettes that evoke some of the best stories.

Monday, March 29, 2010Here's some shirts from the past that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Do-Over Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!

Wednesday, March 24, 2010Derby 139's theme was
"Madness". The themes are getting a bit too repetitive here -- this not only has a lot of overlap with the recent
nightmare derby but also the
palindromes derby in that many of the shirts are meant to be absurd. I'm ready for something a bit more concrete or a technical exercise derby, OK Woot? I'm not crazy about the theme but there's plenty of nice designs I have to acknowledge. Here's my favorites as well as yours. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Breakfast Club" Award
Although I have trouble seeing how ILoveDoodle's "UFegg" has much to do with the theme of "madness", I can't resist it's charm. It's a bold crisp design with retro colors and lots of fun.

Wednesday, March 17, 2010Derby 138's theme was
"Band Names Reinterpreted". The idea here is to take your band names very literally and make a shirt to illustrate it. A fun derby idea like this always gets a lot of entries. Unfortunately, it doesn't necessarily give us a lot of GREAT entries. Themes like this have the classic problem of context -- you don't want to wear a shirt you have to explain. Despite that, there are a number of excellent shirts this week. Here's our favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Legend In Your Own Mind" Award
TGentry's "Dream Theater" has fantastic colors and textures and you see more on each glance. It's a crime that this isn't in the fog.

Monday, March 15, 2010I thought I'd start posting about shirts I've liked in the past that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Do-Over Derby. Wednesday, March 10, 2010Derby 137's theme was
"Luck". It's surprising that they'd allow text at all after last week's text heavy derby. The best shirts (including all of this week's BLAs) just left the text off. A pretty good derby -- a bit heavy on the bunnies and shamrocks but not surprisingly so. Here's our favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "I'm Not Feeling So Well, Marzipan" Award
It's pretty hard to resist the magical combination of Rainbows + Vomit, especially when the leprechaun has no arms. BootsBoots proves again she's the queen of the absurd -- why the votes aren't there this week, I have no idea.

Tuesday, March 09, 2010Well, it looks like Jewelwing didn't notice or isn't interested in the free shirt so I repicked and got GeekFactor12's entry. She'll be getting her free copy of
The Hills are Alive. Thanks to everyone for entering and thanks to Lucky1988 for his generosity!

Wednesday, March 03, 2010Derby 136's theme was
"The New Vintage". Woot has to throw out a text-heavy derby every once in a while. I think it's necessary. Every artist has some silly ideas that just need some text to really make it work. I think this derby really brought out some cool stuff. It also brought out a lot of thrown-together entries but, since pure slogans weren't allowed (there had to be SOMETHING drawn), it wasn't overwhelming. Here's our favorites. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Purple Rain" Award
I know I have way too many Asphalt shirts but I love crisp bold designs like this. Great color choices, shirt layout, and I really love the extra touch of the "splash" on the umbrella. Very pro.

Monday, March 01, 2010We had five people enter the contest for a free copy of Lucky1988's
The Hills are Alive by posting Buy or Vote gallery entries this month. I'm not sure how many of you who posted even realized you were entering the contest but that doesn't matter!
Random.org tells me I should give it to the first Vote entry after the contest started and that's the one for JewelWing's
Forsaking All Others. I'm
assuming JewelWing herself put that up here. Either way, whoever DID put it up, please
contact me with your mailing address and such and I'll pass that on to Lucky1988 to send you your free shirt! If I don't hear from you by the end of the week, I'll pick again. Thanks!
