March 2011
Wednesday, March 30, 2011Derby 192's theme was
"Woodcuts". A nice switch to the organic and artistic after last week's robots. Lots of wonderful detailed designs. Here's your favorites and mine. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Six On Each Arm" Award
With this theme it'd be very easy to create a single-color artistic design with no additional charm but Robsoul has done a wonderful job of making you forget that there are only two colors allowed along with a subtle humor to push it over the edge.

Monday, March 28, 2011Here's some shirts from the past that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Do-Over Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!

Wednesday, March 23, 2011Derby 191's theme was
"Robots Save the World", a sponsored derby from Woot and FUNimation. Besides extra prizes, there is also metallic ink as an option so the artists were pretty jazzed to enter this one. Lot's of great robots here! Here's your favorites and mine. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Give Robo-Peace A Chance" Award
I'll admit that at first I brushed off DianaSprinkle's "Peace" as an off-topic design shoehorned into this derby. However, it's clean simplicity really grew on me. The metallic ink on this would look really sharp against the white background -- depending on how the light hits it, it will blend into the white or stand out brightly. I hope we get a chance to see how this would look in person.

Tuesday, March 22, 2011On
rare occasions, a theme really hits a nerve with me and I like an unmanageable number of them. I want to mention these great wearable designs before the official BLAs tomorrow in hope that they'll get a few more votes. Go vote and give these artists some respectable numbers!
Since I have nothing else to give, these shirts will be getting BLAs just like tomorrow's shirts. Look for the badge in their Shirt.Woot entry comments.

Wednesday, March 16, 2011Derby 190's theme was
"Magic". Not sure what it was about this derby that failed to inspire. We've had very similar topics before with decent results. It felt like most artists weren't feeling it but threw something in the contest anyway -- there were some decent techniques on display but original ideas were in short supply. Here's a few exceptions. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Skin Horse" Award
A rare entry from the very talented Xiaobaosg is a treat at Woot. I can't complain about the votes this has received -- it was in the fog for a good part of the derby and is just out of the fog now. That's very encouraging for a realistically-drawn design which usually doesn't do very well. Besides the great concept, the subtle colors and shirt-filling composition make this fantastic.

Wednesday, March 09, 2011Derby 189's theme was
"Woodland Animals". I guess Woot was hoping we'd get all the bunnies out of our collective system so we'd see them less in the future. We didn't get many bunny shirts but we did get a fair number of owl shirts and a decent selection of other creatures. Ignoring the mostly awful fog, this turned out to be a pretty decent derby. Here's your favorites and mine. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Waiter Was Surly So I Ate Him" Award
BassAnimation's "Wild Diner" is a fun shirt with fantastic colors and a nice shirt-filling layout. LocustPR adds, "Not only is this shirt simple and hilarious, but I'm in love with it mainly because of how happy/pleased all the animals look with all the 'stray' limbs they've found.".

Wednesday, March 02, 2011Derby 188 was the
Double-Take Derby #12 where all the shirts that Woot liked but didn't get printed get a second chance. Yesterday, I talked about the top 5 shirts they missed. Today, it will be the top 5 shirts (again in no particular order) that don't look likely to be printed but really should be. In addition, I have predictions for what shirts are likely to be printed next week when Woot picks their Editor's Choices. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.

Tuesday, March 01, 2011Oops, I forgot we were in a Double-Take when I asked for nominations this morning. This is
Double-Take Derby #12 and since not every shirt can come back for another chance there are a few entries that are sorely missed. This is the top 5 shirts (in no particular order) that I'm sorry aren't here for a second chance -- the Shoulda Been Awards.
What are the shirts you miss since the last Double-Take? Add a comment below of another shirt that didn't make it this far.
On Wednesday, instead of the normal Best Loser Awards there will be another top 5 list -- the top 5 shirts that should have printed but were not.
