May 2010
Thursday, May 27, 2010Derby 148's theme was
"Deja Vu". Woot wasn't looking for shirts ABOUT "deja vu", they were looking for a rehash of any of the themes from the past. Amazingly, we didn't get a thousand entries for the Slogan Derby. Seeing some of these shirts reminds me that there were some truly great themes in the past that would deserve a rehash on their own week (Propaganda, Cryptozoology, Fake me out to the ballgame). But all together like this it felt to me like there were more than the average number of GOOD shirts but somehow not a lot of GREAT shirts. Here's a few exceptions to that. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Cruel To Be Kindling" Award
PaulKremer says "It seems I'm regularly nominating walmazan...Walmazan just consistently puts out top notch artwork with clever ideas. I must admit, this is a little twisted for Walmazan, but I love the style and it made me laugh!"

Monday, May 24, 2010Here's some shirts from the past that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Do-Over Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!

Wednesday, May 19, 2010Derby 147 was the
Double-Take Derby #9 where all the shirts that Woot liked but didn't get printed get a second chance. Yesterday, I talked about the top 5 shirts they missed. Today, it will be the top 5 shirts (again in no particular order) that don't look likely to be printed but really should be. In addition, I have predictions for what shirts are likely to be printed next week when Woot picks their Editor's Choices. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.

Tuesday, May 18, 2010We're in the middle of
Double-Take Derby #9 and since not every shirt can come back for a another chance there are a few entries that are sorely missed. This is the top 5 shirts (in no particular order) that I'm sorry aren't here for a second chance -- the Shoulda Been Awards.
What are the shirts you miss since the last Double-Take? Add a comment below of another shirt that didn't make it this far.
On Wednesday, instead of the normal Best Loser Awards there will be another top 5 list -- the top 5 shirts that should have printed but were not.

Tuesday, May 18, 2010Amarillo is an experienced illustrator who'se been printed at many other sites already. He's had 3 other shirts printed as dailies here at Woot and now he's received his first Derby win. Here's a few more facts about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
132 (Heart) / 6 / 4. I think the "Heart" derby was my first, not too long ago, but I've taken part (almost) ever since. I have the 3 tees I had on Shirt.Woot myself and also other 3 tees I ordered for my 5 year old son.

Derby 139 was another total blowout for the BLA winners -- every single shirt received an Honorable Mention as well. While those shirts battle it out for the Do-Over running right now, here's a couple other great shirts with radically different moods and styles that are now available to resubmit or sell.

Wednesday, May 12, 2010Derby 146's theme was
"Eyewitness History". Woot was looking for what other people were doing while historic events were happening. Woot was way too lax with the rejectionator hammer on this -- there are many shirts that really aren't on theme. Also, it felt like very few artists brought out their A-game for this one and the low vote totals supports that. Here's a few exceptions that also did a wonderful job keeping things on theme. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "It Was Even Worse When He Had His Friend Marilyn Over" Award
Newcomer Inverse's "Warhol's Roommate" is a hilarious idea and a wonderful crisp 60s animation style. I'd love to see more from Inverse!

It's derbies like Derby 138 that make me wonder if Woot cribs BestLosers when they don't want to bother looking through all the shirts. EVERY single BLA also received a Woot HM that week. Here's another couple that were also very cool that almost made the BLA list and can now be put up for sale.

Wednesday, May 05, 2010Derby 145's theme was
"Spring". This is at least our 3rd run for this theme -- it would have been nice to throw in an extra style or color limitation to make it interesting. Not too much really thrilling me here and the vote totals show that you feel the same. Here's a few that DO deserve some more votes though. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Sussudio" Award
LittleClyde's "No Jacket Required" is a great Spring shirt as well as a great Book shirt. Perfect bright colors and crisp lines make it all work.

Monday, May 03, 2010SpiritGreen is brand new and already has his first print. Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
135 (Faster, Higher, Stronger) / 5 / 1. I started eleven weeks ago during the "Faster, Higher, Stronger" Derby. I guessed it would have a sporty theme because of the Winter Olympics and a shirt idea had popped into my head, so when it was announced I thought "Well then, I'd better give this a shot". I've been entering every week since. Sometimes twice. ^_^ "How Natural Selection Works" is my first shirt to be printed. I've had a couple of close calls before but this completely took me by surprise. Seeing your shirt up on the front page is as close to an "I'm going to Disneyland!" moment as pencil jockeys like me get.
