October 2009
Wednesday, October 28, 2009Derby 118's theme was
"Puns". I love puns. A "pun" theme sounds like it would be fun -- but this was mostly disappointing. Most shirts simply illustrated a pun; without the title the shirt would be confusing and not terribly interesting. This is another one of those themes that don't really work outside the derby. However, there were a few shirts that had a fun illustration that worked immediately but had the pun as an extra kicker for those sticking around to look closer. Here's those few shirts. The "Who Lives In A Sandwich Under The Sea" Award
Newcomer SterCrazy's "Jellyfish" is a crisp illustration with a wacky, if slightly familiar, face. Welcome SterCrazy -- I hope to see more.

Wednesday, October 21, 2009Derby 117's theme was
"Halloween". An expected theme if maybe a bit late -- you'll probably want to overnight this week's winners to make sure they make it in time for your festivities. Incidental text was allowed and the privilege was not abused by the entrants. Lots of great entries this week from funny to truly scary. Here's my favorites. The "Hero That Can Defend Us From Jokeraccoon" Award
Newcomer Grisser's "Batbear" is delightfully odd and amusing. Fantastic shadows and lighting -- you can totally imagine him on your porch.

Wednesday, October 14, 2009Derby 116's theme was
"Erase Hunger, Create Hope". I love the idea of the World Food Programme campaign this is based on,
"A billion for a billion" and I have no problem with having a theme with deeper issues BUT I am very disappointed that Woot couldn't see to part with even a small token amount of actual CASH to WFP. You know, some of the CASH that we'll be spending to buy these shirts. Woot is happy to profit on the misfortune of a billion people but not do anything to help besides give it some "exposure". Yuck. The shirts were not "yuck" however. It is difficult to get a relevant and attractive shirt that is on theme without doing something morbid. Here's the shirts that did that with style. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "12:30 Flight" Award
ChuckleNorris' "Air Hope" has a stunning use of negative space, textures, and subtle colors with a simple, direct and touching message. Wonderful.

Wednesday, October 07, 2009Derby 115's theme was
"National Parks". I wasn't thinking very creatively and thought this would be a pretty limiting theme. However, the derby artists showed me how fun this one could be. Allowing text is a nice addition for this one. Lots to choose from but here's my favorites for this derby. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Inkwell Of Inspiration" Award
Mathiole has been trying out Woot for a few derbies and is getting the hang of our crazy rules and customs. He's obviously not new to t-shirt design as is clear from this attractive and professional piece. Bold contrasting colors and a nice use of text. I'd love to wear this one.
