Monday, October 31, 2011Here's a couple shirts selected from from the
Derby 215 Loser Awards that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Double-Take Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!

Wednesday, October 26, 2011Derby 222's theme was
"Gadgets to Enhance Everyday Life". Despite the way that reads, Woot was looking for USELESS inventions. Many artists got caught up in the inventiveness and made something that people would actually want. The rejectionator didn't catch all of them but here's a list of truly useless ones. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Standing Ovation" Award
Fantastic mid-century linework and colors on CDrewlow's "The Auto-Clapper". This truly captures the spirit of the theme more than anything else this week.

Wednesday, October 19, 2011Derby 221's theme was
"Maps Redux". This feels like the second week in a row where there was a solid theme with a lots of potential and not enough artists really gave it their all. There was also the issue of an unusually harsh rejectionator this week that was rejecting most (but not all -- let's not be consistent!) pop culture. Text was, of course, allowed (almost required for a map design) and somewhat abused -- the "graphical element" in some of the entries was close to non-existent. Here's a list of the few shirts that didn't make any of those mistakes. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "I'm Your Satellite" Award
I love the sense of depth and unspoken backstory in Rasabi's "Destination". Great colors as well. Nice work!

Wednesday, October 12, 2011Derby 220's theme was
"Hallowoot", Woot's now annual Halloween derby. Text was allowed but not used much by the artists. Some solid work this week but no runaway hits. Here's a list of the best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "The Claw Has Chosen" Award
Naolito always manages to use advanced shading, halftones, and linework without ever getting results that are muddy. Despite the work he obviously puts in, the results have a calm simplicity and precision about them.

Sunday, October 09, 2011Except for one brief tweet, I haven't really told you about my new site,
ShirtMagazine.com . The intention of this new site is to replace the Buy and Vote sections here at BestLosers with a site dedicated to promoting the best in t-shirts and design. Just like the Buy/Vote sections work now, you can let me know when your own shirts are for sale or up for vote on another site. In addition, I'd love for to hear from you about the best artistic, impressive, and worthy t-shirts you uncover as a fellow fan of t-shirts and design. All your best choices will be added to mine as a curated list of what inspires you, gets you to vote, or earns your money as the best of the best.

Sunday, October 09, 2011Over a dozen artists have agreed to participate in the BestLosers' Calendar. Now we're in the middle of collecting images and information. Barring any problems in that process, we'll have the calendar for sale November 1st -- plenty early for the Christmas shopping season.
Meanwhile, here's a season-appropriate shirt that will be included in the calendar: Josephus' clever and colorful "Chicks in Costumes".

Wednesday, October 05, 2011Derby 219's theme was
"Safari". A theme like this brings out more art and less jokes. The competition was intense and everyone brought out their best game. Here's a list of the best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "What You Get For Sticking Out Your Neck" Award
Beautiful colors, linework, and a lovely shirt-filling design that uses the space to maximum effectiveness. It's going to be stiff with all that ink but it will be worth it.
