September 2008
Monday, September 29, 2008ISO30 just started participating in the derbies a few weeks ago and already has his first print with a very enthusiastic number of votes. Here's what else there is to know about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
58 (Work) / 0 / 1. My first design was for both the front and back of the shirt, and I missed the whole parody thing. It was rejected rather quickly.
What are you tools of choice?
Illustrator and
Photoshop CS3. I don’t have a
tablet, but I’m thinking I’m going to need one if I end up taking this a bit more seriously.

Monday, September 29, 2008In response to Woot's Honorable Mentions, here's a few that I think they missed. Since these shirts will almost certainly NOT be in the "Best Of" derby, they are excellent candidates to be sold and printed by the artists themselves using
SpreadShirt or other such direct-to-garment shops. Here's a two very different shirts -- one artistic, one funny -- that might do well sold on their own.
Wednesday, September 24, 2008Derby 61's theme was
"Movie Titles Re-interpreted". Similar to the Lyrics derby, they were looking for shirts inspired by the title of the movie but not necessarily about the movie. Incidental text was allowed. A great theme that produced many creative designs. I guess the Woot-off has distracted people since there were no nominations this week. That's good since I had enough trouble paring down all these great entries without a lot of other shirts to consider. Here's the best of the best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Not Another Orange" Award
Despite my sarcastic title (there were a LOT of Clockwork Oranges this week), Drakxxx's "Inspired by a Clockwork Orange" is stunning, unique, and beautiful. A pleasant sketchy style, subdued colors, and a great layout on the shirt.

Sunday, September 21, 2008Here's a catchup interview from Derby 56. Uhhuhhuhhuh has been here a few months and got his first print in Derby 56. Here's more about him.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
45 (Imaginational Symbols) / 6 / 1. My first derby was Imaginational Symbols. I think I got like 4 votes. Ha!
What are you tools of choice?
I'm borrowing the world's tiniest
Wacom Graphire at the moment. I've only used it for a few entries, but it's growing on me. I really need something a little bigger now that I've gotten used to it though. Before that, it was a mouse, pen and paper...oh, and
Photoshop/
Illustrator.

Saturday, September 20, 2008Annajo has been around just a couple of months and has just scored her first print. Here's more about her.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
52 (Emergency) / 1 / 1. My first derby was technically "Emergency". However, not quite knowing the rules, I swiftly got rejected. So far, I've only purchased 1 shirt but I've got my eye on one from the upcoming derby.
What are you tools of choice?
I use a little of everything, however
Adobe Illustrator is what I'm most skilled in.

Friday, September 19, 2008OpenDesign has been around since Derby 34 where he came in 3rd on his first try. He's back to show us it wasn't a fluke and to tell us a little more about himself.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
34 (Canada) / 3 / 2. My first was Canada (derby 34), which I somehow managed to get third place in with "Northern Lights (Take II)". Beginner’s luck, maybe? I’ve only bought three, of which my favorite is probably "Ooooh, Shiney!" by DSladek. I just think it’s a brilliant illustration.

Wednesday, September 17, 2008Derby 60's theme was
"Autumn". Two things we've never seen before this week -- a repeated theme and the appropriate associated rule of no resubmissions. Also, no text allowed this week. A good classic theme with reasonable limitations. Since many of the expected directions an artist could go with this were specifically banned (i.e., Halloween and Thanksgiving stuff), that left us with a lot of tree shirts. Even though they've been done to death, I've got a soft spot for "tree tees". Here's a bunch you and I liked with me restraining myself from selecting too many trees. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "No One Will Know It's Not Real" Award
RGlee129 is one of the few artists who can capture the funny and the beautiful in the same design. "Tree Toupee" is hilarious and looks great. Nice colors -- I love that hairspray sheen on the hairpiece!

Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
51 (Pixel Grid) / 10 / 1. I started with the Pixel Grid derby - I wasn't convinced I could do it, but my son talked me into it and said this would be the perfect starting point. We've bought about 10 different designs for ourselves or our kids.
What are you tools of choice?
I start with a pencil, make it a little cleaner with a pen, then scan it and edit in either Corel Photopaint7 that I've had forever and am comfortable using, or
Adobe Photoshop Elements.

Wednesday, September 10, 2008Derby 59's theme was
"At the Luau". No text allowed. A vague and limiting theme. Not too many artists seemed to know how to take this in a new area past the millions of Hawaiian shirts that already exist. Still, here's a few you and I liked. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Something For Kate" Award
Armeleia's quirky "Luau drinks -- Your mileage may vary" managed to do something unique without getting rejected for being off topic. Interesting details, subdued colors, and makes you wonder about the story behind the shirt.

Friday, September 05, 2008BootsBoots is a fresh-from-the-interweebs genuine n00b who never even heard of Woot a couple weeks ago. And now she gets her first print on her second try! Here's a few more facts about her.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
57 (Dessert) / 0 / 1. I haven't bought any yet. I only discovered Woot about a week and a half ago. Does that make me a bad person? I'm just not hip to what's going on in the world, don't judge me. This is my first print, but I'm completely hooked on submitting designs now.

Wednesday, September 03, 2008Derby 58's theme was
"Work". Text was not only allowed, it could be a major part of the design -- as long as it wasn't the ONLY part of the design. I expected more shirts I'd like to wear to work this week since I'm a 8to5er at a place without a dress code. Not too many but still plenty of great shirts to choose from -- here are the ones you and I liked best. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "No Static At All" Award
RadioMode doesn't enter the weekly derby very often but when he does, it is always a pleasure to see what he's come up with. This week, he has a highly detailed fanciful music factory with pleasantly subdued colors.

Wednesday, September 03, 2008Happy birthday to BestLosers! One year ago I started this site. Shirt.Woot had been operating for six weeks or so and people were excited about all the great entries they saw in each derby. The problem was that they never got to buy them and there was no good way to let people know if and when they ever went on sale. Sites like
CafePress and
SpreadShirt were around to print and sell the shirts but there was no central location to list them all. I started this site with the intention to setup that
gallery -- the blog was really an afterthought. One year later the gallery concept is well entrenched (but underused) and the blog is going strong.
So, what's planned for year two? Here's a few things:
- Get organized! There's a lot of useful posts over the last year that I'm sure people would like to reference if they knew about them. I'll make those easy to find.
- To finally practice what I preach and setup a professional SpreadShirt shop ala' Amorphia Apparel.
- To rebuild and expand the t-shirt gallery with comments, tags, incentives, and new ways to get your design promoted and printed.
Finally, as a birthday gift to BestLosers, Joel Lewis of Shirt.Woot has agreed to an interview. Look for that coming soon!
p.s. If you're wondering what to get me, scroll down to my posts from a few days ago and you will know exactly what I want...
Tuesday, September 02, 2008Illuminator is relatively new to the derbies. She started in May, got her first Best Loser Award in July and is now celebrating her first print. Here's a few more facts about her.
Shirt.Woot Stats? (first derby / shirts bought / shirts printed)
43 (Slogans) / 15 / 1. I started with the Slogans derby -- I thought it was just too easy to pass up. Submitted 4 designs, two of them got rejected and the best one got all of eight votes. I've bought 15 shirts, counting two of "Jimmy... is that you?" and three of my own design. This is my only print -- I've never submitted any designs for dailies.

Tuesday, September 02, 2008Hmmxkrazee is a derby old-timer who is getting his first print after many tries and after buying all of YOUR winning shirts. The least you could do is return the favor. It just goes to show you should never give up -- eventually everyone gets a turn (
If you keep trying. And you have talent. And are lucky. Some restrictions apply.). Here's a few more fascinating things about this guy.
