September 2011
Wednesday, September 28, 2011Derby 218's theme was
"New Landmarks". The theme was actually OK. I think the writeup for it was confusing and a lot of artists were scared off. That left a lot of half-baked ideas and half-drawn art and some very low vote totals. Here's just a few favorites -- I think the shortest BLAs ever. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Bustle In Your Hedgerow" Award
I'm assuming TobeFonseca is the same artist as TobiasFonseca. The beautiful simplicity is there so it must be. Tobe experimented with a lot of techniques and images this week, all striking. This one is my favorite.

Monday, September 26, 2011I've sent about twenty invitations to be part of the calendar and about 60% have responded (some with "no"). The toughest thing is trying to contact artists where Woot is the only method of contact. I've got commitments for 10 months so far, including one of my own.
People I still haven't heard from who I haven't found a reliable way to contact include: Dekonstruct, MichaelEvans (aka DeadFrog), LittleClyde, and RobSoul. A couple of more artists I haven't even bothered to contact on Woot (since I know they're not around) are KidGrenouille and TAScott02. If you have any idea how to contact these artists please have them contact me using Woot or my
Contact page.
I've contacted every artist that people recommended on the nomination page but with only a couple responses. I'd consider more
nominations, especially if you know some way besides Woot to contact the artist!
Meanwhile, here's another shirt that will be included in the calendar...

Monday, September 26, 2011Here's a couple shirts selected from from the
Derby 210 Loser Awards that are now available to be either submitted to another contest or sold outright via a print-to-order service. To be more specific, it's been over 60 days for these shirts and they're either free of Honorable Mentions or have already made their way through a Double-Take Derby. If you agree that you'd like to see these again, post your comment here to let the artist know!

Wednesday, September 21, 2011Derby 217's theme was
"Hipster Animals". A topic about an ill-defined subculture that everybody despises did not sound like fun. I expected the results to be awful but was pleasantly surprised that the artists were able to make some truly charming characters. Here's your favorites and mine. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "FSJ" Award
This week is all about interesting characters but SpiritGreen's "The Apple Core", with it's single color and obvious parody, is also incredibly wearable.

Wednesday, September 14, 2011I'm officially supposed to end calendar nominations by Thursday but since the roster isn't filled up yet, I'll let it go a little longer. If you don't want to bother looking up some old favorites, how about throwing in your two cents for the few that others have already picked? Getting a couple extra votes would make it easier to decide which artists get contacted next. Check it all out on the
nomination page.
I'm going to be posting this reminder regularly and, each time I do, I'll be revealing one of my picks where I've already contacted the artist and got their blessing.
My 5th selection is Omnitarian's wonderfully absurd "Cactus with a Fez".

Wednesday, September 14, 2011Derby 216's theme was
"Household Chores". It's nice to be back to a regular derby after a couple weeks of special events. I thought I'd like this theme more but the number of truly interesting designs were few. Here's your favorites and mine. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Lousy At Picking Up Hair" Award
MichaelEvans' "Nature Abhors a Vacuum" is a wonderful play on words with great details and linework. I think a yellow Dyson-style vacuum would have been more distinctive and made the whole thing more clear.

Monday, September 12, 2011There is now less than one week left to nominate designs for the 2012 BestLosers Calendar. I'm happy to pick them all myself if you really don't have any opinions. You can do that and read all the rules on the
nomination page.

My 3rd selection is by SeedUvPain and has such an exuberant over-the-top awesomeness.

Thursday, September 08, 2011Derby 215's theme was
"Double-Bagged". It's hard to get excited about designs -- no matter how great -- when you know you won't get to wear them. That probably explains both the limited number of entries and low vote counts. That said, here's the best of the best in bags this week. As usual, click on the thumbnail to see the full-size shirt and comments on Shirt.Woot.
The "Highlights" Award
ApeLad's "What's Wrong with this Picture" captures what I'd really like to see when I receive a Woot bag -- something fun to look where I can notice something new each time I look at it or each t-shirt I order. This really highlights ApeLad's skills as a cartoonist and has so much charm.

Sunday, September 04, 2011Four years ago last Friday I posted my first
blog entry on BestLosers and have pretty much posted several times a week continually since then. I started blogging right before the 5th derby so BestLosers is just a tad younger than Shirt.Woot itself.
In the past, I've used the BestLosers' birthday to make plans for the future of the blog. That hasn't gone so well -- what I end up doing is rarely what I plan so this year we'll just have presents and "dessert" and YOU are the one who gets them. The present is a shrinkwrapped copy of Gestalten's t-shirt book, "Torso" while dessert is "pi", namely an unworn copy of my pi shirt from last year.
The very first person to correctly answer all of the BestLosers' trivia questions below, gets the Gestalten book. I'll pick randomly from all the remaining correct answers to award the t-shirt.
